Teacher pleads guilty to stealing student's prosthetic arm

NORTHAMPTON - A former Hampshire Regional High School substitute teacher yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing a student's prosthetic arm.

Bryan Bridges, 52, formerly of 43 Strong Road, Southampton, previously pleaded guilty in Hampshire Superior Court in October 2004 to a series of weapons charges and is serving 2½ years in state prison.


Bridges was terminated from his job as a substitute teacher after his January 2004 arrest as he drove to work. Police found weapons in his car and at his home. Northampton District Court Richard J. Carey sentenced Bridges yesterday to two years' probation to be served concurrently with the two-year probation sentence he received on the weapons charges.


Assistant District Attorney Michael A. Cahillane said that in October 2003 a 13-year-old girl brought a prosthetic arm to Hampshire Regional while Bridges was a substitute teacher. After Bridges' January 2004 arrest on weapons charges, police searched his car and home and seized weapons. Soon after that, his fiancee brought other items to Southampton police, including the prosthetic arm, Cahillane said.


The Williamsburg girl to whom the arm belonged identified it as hers, Cahillane said. The girl was not present in the courtroom yesterday, but her parents were. The judge ordered Bridges to stay away from the girl.


Cahillane said police visited Bridges at the Hampshire County House of Correction and asked him about the arm and he responded "Yeah, I know what you are talking about."


However, Bridges told the judge that he had never talked to officers about the arm.
