Pick up the PC Magazine issue where they tabulated the results of all the thousands of customer surveys returned to them.

Under the networking section, Linsksys reigned supreme. It was much better than 3com, Netgear, or Microsoft.

I'm using a Linksys wireless card right now, on a Linksys wireless router, plugged into a Linksys cable modem. No problems with any of them.

It's pretty sweet.

when people add their own network, it messes up your connection. You're wireless right? Run Netstumbler and see if there are any other networks up. You might need to change channels on your AP.

17. That would be "script kiddies". A real hacker would know how...

...to break your encryption, sniff your traffic, spoof a MAC address (just in case your using MAC authentication), and gain access. Check out Whoppix (A Linux-flavored live CD) and you'll see just how easy it could be.

... have to find your computer with a ping. That is level one protection. If you have a gateway that simply doesn't respond to any IP packet request that it didn't initiate, there is no way to get in, hacker or not.

19. True, for the most part...

...but if I can sniff traffic (And no, you don't need to be "broadcasting" your SSID for this to happen), crack the encryption which isn't hard, I'll be able to tell what SSID a network is using (from other computers on that network most likely), what the HEX key is, the MAC address so I can spoof it, and then I'm in. Now, it's not as easy as it sounds, granted. But, a few hours in Downtown "Your town here" with a laptop and Whoppix, anything can happen. The great thing about wireless is that you don't have to ping anything to find something. I like your comment on filtering traffic at a "gateway" and not responding to anonymous requests (other than those to your website). It always amazes me how few people actually do this. With well written ACL's on a router, you can almost turn it into a firewall.

My Linksys cable modem has been on 24/7 for three strait years. It couldn't work any better.

Landed on one of the antenna and something inside broke. Worked fine up until then. New one has worked ever since.

I have 3 on Linkseys, wireless. The 98 gave me major headaches. I had to call Linkseyes to get it going.

16. Yes they do! I had to dump my 802.11g Router...

...and picked up a US Robotics, which is like, 10 times better. My Linksys Router had the absolutely worst signal ever. My laptop, sitting 2 feet from the thing, would only show a signal strength of 35 out of 94, at best. HORRIBLE. I have a tough time Cisco provides them with any hardware or software.

20. Linksys does not suck

They are the best networking company in the world.

Excellent customer service, great warranties, and top-notch products.

The only downside is the price.

Linsksys is leagues above Netgear, 3com, etc.
