Why have I turned into a DVD freak?

Every time I go to Fred Myer, I browse the DVDs and I always want to buy something.

I like the older DVDs that are $10, they're so cheap.. and they have some good movies! Today I bought Benny and Joon, I love that movie. I'm going to go watch it, once I get 3,000 posts so BB wont kick my ass..... :P

1. I got trapped into that habit back in the days of VHS.

Now I have at least 50 tapes that I've never watched. It's a rare movie that'll get me to watch it a second time.

10. Classics new to DVD mostly

The Letter-1939-Bette Davis-William Wyler film.

King Solomon's Mines-1950-You gotta love the drums in the opening music.

Random Harvest-1940?-tearjerkerery at its best.

How To Steal A Million-I love all Willaim Wyler movies. O'Toole was beautiful and of course A. Hepburn.

Avalon-The joint Japanese-Polish film about futuristic gamers.

Glengarry Glen Ross-Mamet.

Life As A House-Kevin Kline. A great tearjerker.

BSG-miniseries Impulse buy.

6. BTW Be careful.

I heard something about two competing standards that will allow more information to go on a single DVD. Half the major studios are backing one, and half the other.

One day some of your newer DVDs may not play on machines using the standard that eventually wins out.

12. That's referring to the next generation of DVDs (HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray)

Both of the competing next-generation technologies will be backwards-compatible with the DVDs currently on the market. In other words, an HD-DVD player or Blu-ray DVD player will play your current DVDs. The reason is simple: current DVD technology has a huge user base and is quite lucrative for the studios. Any attempt at a next-generation standard that ignored that user base would be dead in the water.

HD-DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs won't be on the market in the U.S. for another year, so you won't have to worry about buying the wrong kind for a little while. Anyway, I'm sure they will be clearly labeled as "HD-DVD" or "Blu-ray" (or whatever the final trade names are) to avoid confusion. I'm a DVD nut myself (as you can see from my collection), but I'll be waiting for the marketplace to select one of the two new DVD technologies before buying a new player. In the meantime, I have plenty of normal DVDs to tide me over.
