13. Elmo
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 03:16 AM by LeftyMom
He wasn't bad in small doses but now "Elmo's World" takes up the last fifteen minutes of Sesame Street and it is quiet possibly the most annoying thing in the world. Who would have thought Sesame Street would someday be so annoying?

Oh, Baby Bear on Sesame Street and Caillou (another PBS kids show) have got to have the whiniest voices in the universe. If my kid sounded like that I'd stab my eardrums out with an icepick.

Edited to add: I forgot Bill Walton. That man has got to be the most annoying tv personality ever.

17. I TOTALLY agree.
Elmo is too hyperactive and cutesy and desperate to please. I actually like Barney better! Now that's bad! They have racheted up the pace of Sesame Street to the point where it is awful.

Kids actually LIKE slow-paced entertainment, and they are better able to absorb it. Fast-cut stuff is not good for them.

28. Sesame Street is still a wonderful program, and
Elmo is one my two year son's favorite characters. I don't see how it is any more fast paced then when I watched the program as a child. Some of the characters are different, but the show is essentially the same. I'm not sure what everyone is bitching about. I think the shows on PBS are great. My son also likes Caillou too.

29. When I was a kid I grew up more on Mr. Rogers
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 01:21 PM by UdoKier
And I still would prefer my kids watch him. Sesame Street is way too MTV for me. We also get the Japanese network, NHK (our kids are bilingual bicultural) and the kid's programming on NHK is so far superior it's amazing. Pacing is just right for kids, and there is a certain routine to the segments of the show that is comforting to little ones. I really wish the folks at PBS would study NHK's kids programming and lean a few things. Enough attention-span-destroying quick edits!

36. I watched Mr. Rogers too.
I believe it is still on PBS, but it is on in the afternoon when my son is taking a nap. I don't think Sesame Street destroys attention span. My son's attention span is getting better, not worse. He is two, and he loves to have books read to him. I also grew up on Sesame Street. I never had problems with ADD, and I was always a good, conscientious student in school. There's far worse things on TV that kids can watch. PBS is the best there is for folks who don't have cable. Frankly, most cable stations are worse, not better, than PBS.

40. Concur.
Last week there a segment with Ray Charles singing the ABC song. How can you beat that?

While I could do without Elmo's World, a lot of the new things are cool and still in keeping with the spirit of the program. e.g. the Spanish word of the day, Journey to Ernie, and the new characters like Alan at Hooper's store, Maria's daughter Gabby, and Gordon's son (that guy with the cornrows...can't remember his name.) It's pretty much the only TV my 2.5 year old daughter watches...other than when she watches part of a game with me.

49. Steve in '08!!!
Didn't Steve from Blue's Clues do a recording with the Flaming Lips? If he's talented enough to pull that off, then he might be our man in 2008. He certainly assumes a greater intelligence in his audience than George Walker Bush does in his. We might have do something to address the perception that he's soft on defence though.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm hopping on the subway and taking the little one downtown this afternoon. We'll probably pick it up while we're there.

but for me the whole movie was a downer, sorta written from a teacher/authoritarian point of view contrary to the claims of its title. Give me John Hughes anyday over that and Ferris Buehler.
