Watching a beloved pet die has to be the WORST thing.....

I am watching my sweet kitty Sky's last few days and it is torturing me. She has cancer in her belly and there is no hope.

4. I went through the same thing last year with my beloved dachshund

it just about killed me too. I was determined that he die at home, surrounded by the things and the people that he loved, and that is the way that it indeed happened. But looking back, I now think that I should have let him go sooner and done something to end his suffering earlier but for my own selfish reasons, didn't. I regret that now. At the very end, I had to call the vet because he was going into convulsions. Oddly (or maybe not so oddly), about two hours before he died, he perked up, and actually barked and begged for food and seemed like my old dear, sweet baby once again. Maybe that was his farewell gift to me. Or maybe he really just wanted to eat ice cream one last time. And he did. :)

9. I went through it 1 1/2 years ago with my dog Brooke

isn't it awful? I had to put her to sleep because she got so bad I couldn't stand to see her suffer. I stayed with her during the process and I really don't think I can do that again with Sky. I have asked my husband to take her and stay with her when it is time. I can't stand to watch them take their last breath... :(

14. A friend of mine took her beloved pooch in to be put down, and on the way

stopped at the store and bought her a big chocolate bar, so that the TRULY enjoyed her last meal. That beloved dog died with her favorite treat in her mouth... isn't that sweet?

11. I'm sorry, leftchick. I recently went through this with one of ours.

She was a rescue that we knew would never get adopted, but she'd be put down at a shelter. She had tumors and her vision was gone. She had 2+ great, loving, wonderful years with us and the other rescues that came and went. At the very end, it was ugly. The cancer was eating her up. Saying goodbye is so very hard.

17. Sky is a rescue too.

She came from a family of barn cats that were going to be killed by the farmer. A rescue group rounded up about 30 of them and she was at my Vet's for adoption. I will never forget the first time I saw her beautiful sweet face. She is by far the sweetest little cat I have ever owned.

I went through this not long ago with my dog Brooke. She had the same type of cancer on her spleen. But she was 13, Sky is not even 9 yet so it really sucks. I am waiting until she gets uncomfortable or quits eating then I will have my husband take her to the Vet. I can't do that again myself. I can tell it won't be long. 19. I'm so sorry... :(

:cry: My 15-year old kitty, Ms. Marble, left us the day before Thanksgiving. Spend all the time you can with Sky, as hard as it is. I'll keep you both in my thoughts.

20. We just put down our 14-year old big dog before Christmas...

He needed help getting up (could not raise himself on his hindquarters his hips were so weak), and was developing lipomas and other bumps on his sides and face. His back legs would sometimes get tangled up as if he could not feel or control them.

We finally decided to have the vet come out, check him out, and euthanize him if needed. She gave him a couple of tests and just said 'it's time'.

One of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but I put his head on my lap as the injection was administered and he slipped peacefully away.

21. You have my sympathy

In reading this post, I got teary-eyed thinking of the day hubby and I will have to say goodbye to our beloved Panda Bear (siberian husky-pedigreed, bought as a puppy), Scruffy (chow -rescue) and/or Shakespeare (dwarf bunny).

We love our animals; they are our babies. They give you so much in return for so little. As much as I want to get angry with them when they surreptitiously go into the kitchen or trash can and leave their exploits all over the floor, I can't help but just laugh at them.

Pets are truly wonderful; they read our minds, they soothe us, yet they have such short lives... And there are humans who are assholes who live for so many years...

I hope you and your kitty will have beautiful last moments together and hopefully you'll soon be ready to accept another wonderful pet into your home....

Sorry for your kitty. At least with animals, if they're suffering, it can be ended. On edit, my post might sound like it belittles your pain, thats not my intent. Remembering to keep it in perspective might help reduce your pain.

My Dad is suffering from advanced prostate cancer and pre-demensia. He is refusing Doctor's orders and treatment as well. Any death of a loved one is horrible. Animal or human. It looks like 2005 is going to be worse than 2004 for me and my family.

24. I can really relate to what you're going through now

My sweet Corgi has canine lymphoma, and this will probably be her last year. It was diagnosed last March and we did 5 months of chemotherapy treatments - which were successful but only temporarily.

I took her for a checkup this past Saturday and some of the lymph nodes are swollen again and the vet thinks the cancer is back (even though the blood work is fine so far.) This is tearing me up because of my 3 dogs she is the one who has my heart. She is sweet and loving and stubborn . . . and life will be empty without her.

I keep imagining about the future and how I'll take her to the vet's when there's too much pain so she can be put to sleep - I'm trying to prepare myself mentally for it but I know I'll be a wreck. I want to be with her in the end for her peace of mind, but it'll be devastating for me.

I'm really sorry about your cat and I want you to know you're not alone. I think spending these last days with her is the right thing to do even though it's painful. I'm sorry.

I understand what you are going through. Our parakeet got pneumonia a year ago this month and died. We watched and medicated him and hoped for the best and it was all for not..... Conway Tweety went over the Rainbow Bridge Jan 6th 2004. My thoughts are with you during this time. Sky must know how loved she is. There is a web site you should visit after Sky is gone.

27. I am so sorry

I had a cat for 17 years. She was part of an abandoned litter and couldn't have been more than 4 weeks old when I took her in.

I had to have her euthanized and I cried all the way to the vet. the whole time I was there, and all the way home.

Losing a beloved pet is incredibly painful.

I lost my first pet when I was seven--the family dog, a 14-year-old Labrador Retriever named Ursa. She had arthritic joints, no control over her bodily functions, and her eyes had clouded with cataracts. She could barely walk. It was so, so sad...she died one afternoon sitting by the fire. I cried for a week.

37. FIND A VET WHO DOES HOUSECALLS- If Sky Needs An Injection

to be put to sleep go through the yellow pages and find someone who will do it at home.

My beloved Myrna was a 16 yr. old cat and began refusing to eat.

She was TERRIFIED of being in moving cars so I searched and found a vet to come to the house.

Vet found massive tumor in her belly and said death was very close.

I waited a day or two... til it was obvious my Beloved Myrna was hanging on through sheer force of will... called the vet to come to come the next day.

I also called several close friends who came for support vet was doing the injection and also to be present while I buried Myrna.
