Chris Reeve was something back in the day too. I was never a big Supes fan until Smallville, but the man just had, I dunno, presence. He guest starred on Smallville, and I got all misty eyed (it was also by far the best episode of the entire season too).

As far as female heroes? Dude, Wonder Woman, no contest. She can tie me up with that lasso any time. :) I also want to have many biologically impossible babies with Goddess Dawn. She's my favorite "modern" hero, mainly because I love the way Lisner draws--she's just so Pagan, and unlike 99% of the women in comics today she looks like she eats!
