One of my favorite stories is of Jackson's relationship with the press. Chided for his poor spelling on official documents, Jackson angrily told one reporter, "It's a damned poor mind that can't think of at least two ways to spell a word."

My early teachers taught "Old Hickory," but my older cousins revealed the "Sharp Knife" Jackson. It was a really good early lesson for me in how the textbooks often don't have my best interests at heart.
