Here is mine. I watched it last night...



"De-Lovely" is De-Looooooooong. So very, very long. It may still be going for all I know... like when you're sure a film is reaching its conclusion yet the dvd clock reads 1h 15m and you want to cry or fall asleep, yet feel obligated to stick it out like dental surgery...

The musical numbers had about as much sparkle as a bottle of André Champagne that's been sitting opened on a kitchen counter for three days in July.

Though I must confess it was somewhat refreshing to see Ashley Judd play a character other than the usual tough as nails cop on the trail of a serial killer who is simultaneously stalking her until she teams with a Morgan Freeman/Andy Garcia type.

Of course, the film is not without its surprises... with "guest star" pop singers attempting to boost their level of artistic respect by crooning random Cole Porter tunes. HEY LOOK - It's Alanis Morrissette! HEY LOOK - It's Robbie Williams! HEY LOOK - It's sundog getting ready to throw a hammer at the TV cause he's so pissed he spent his $3 on this friggin movie!!! AHHHHH!

A better really depressing movie is "The House of Sand & Fog." In other words, it is a more pleasant stroll down the lane of self destruction.

12. Shelter Island-Showtime original movie

That was by far the most gawd-awful worst movie I saw in 2004. The movie tried to be "clever" by putting all of these stupid twists at the end of the movie that didn't make any sense.

Ally Sheedy, Chris Penn and Stephen Baldwin (apparently before he got "saved") were in it. None of the actors had any chemistry with each other whatsoever.

I just saw it at the video store last week. God help anyone who rents that movie.

34. Trying to stretch a SNL-like sketch into a full-length movie ...

... failed yet again. While it can occasionally work, given an abundance of creative input, this one failed miserably, imho. Will Farrell was far better-presented in "Elf".


I think people who enjoyed this movie are probably easily amused.

Not from where I was sitting - it all looked fake as could be.

Let's just set aside the issue of hugely expanded polar ice caps, without the slightest change in the shapes of the coastlines all around the world. Oh, heck, let's just set aside the whole premise of the movie. If you set aside the basic story, and the dialog, and the acting, and overall look of the movie, what's left isn't that bad (the font used on the credits).

Has Ian Holm ever been in such a rancid pile?

57. Have to agree about The Day After Tomorrow

It was one of two movies on the All Nippon Airways inflight entertainment system that I hadn't seen, so I gave it a try. If I hadn't already been wasting ten hours flying across the Pacific, it would have been a real waste of time.

On the way back, I watched the new version of The Stepford Wives. While the old version (1975) was creepy and had a horror movie ending, this one was stupid, with overly broad humor and a cop-out ending.

I think I'll bring more books next time I fly to Japan.

Ones I saw most recently that aren't worth it are The Darkness: visually creepy and interesting to a point, but with such a convoluted plot and disappointing twist of an ending that it leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, and Lost in Translation: to me, it was just kind of a meandering tale about two people I didn't care very much about, and the cinematography wasn't enough to redeem it.

42. I enjoyed 'Lost in Translation' to a degree ... far more than many movies.

My enjoyment, however, came from a very large amount of empathy for the situation: short-term business travel in a foreign country.

The de facto cultural isolation, absence of a social support structure, and the typical 9-5 'accommodation' of one's presence is a situation I'm all-too-familiar with. When the novelty wears off, it can get barren. I've been very fortunate in many cases to be intra-personally 'welcomed' by folks going above-and-beyond, but "wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am" business travel is often quite devoid of the kinds of human interaction we're accustomed to. In a sense, it was good 'training' to be put in a position where I needed to enjoy my own company and explore the "half-full" aspects, but it can be a very lonely experience. When that experience is used as a context to portray Platonic Love ... simple human respect ... I found the portrayal quite evocative.

I know everyone loved it, but I didn't laugh once.

I don't like physical comedy or slapstick humor or gross-out humor or humor where anyone is hurt or humiliated. I don't think this make me superior in any way, just wired differently.

Hate the 3 Stooges (but then again, I'm female) and I Love Lucy. (But I do have a sense of humor - I loved Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Full Monty and Best of Show and the Marx Bros. and a whole lot of others - just no slapstick)

I have a great deal of that attitude, and also eschew the Three Stooges for the same reasons. Nonetheless, I found "There's Something About Mary" to be a VERY enjoyable romantic comedy ... where I could laugh at behavior without laughing at the character, a character with just a tiny bit more depth than the typical slapstick 'humorization' of assault and battery. I essentially saw it as a triumph of our substantive humanity over the superficiality of our dysfunction.

And Cameron Diaz is hot. :evilgrin: :silly:

I just sat through the whole movie and didn't laugh once - I didn't think "I won't laugh at this! It's just wrong!" It just didn't stimulate any laughter, just like "Antiques Roadshow" doesn't.

What's weird is that one of my SO's friends will call me whenever he's opening a comedy at his small theater in Philadelphia and the critics are going to be there. I'm so easily amused and easily cracked-up that he wants me in the audience -- it sort of gives the audience permission to laugh (highbrow OR lowbrow stuff). My SO he cringes at the gym when I'm up on the Body Trek laughing my ass off over some dumb sit-com and the rest of the gym is totally quiet.

UN-believable, cartoon characters, heavy-handed "message" intruding into the drama, just terrible crap, on the level of a quickie TV crime docu-drama.

But a beautiful girl went "ugly" in it, and apparently makeup = acting. I love that line, "Ugly is the new retarded for women," a reference to the fact that actors seem to guarantee themselves an oscar by acting retarded (Forrest Gump, Rain Man, Sling Blade) when its actually easier to act as a cartoonishly afflicted individual than as a three dimensional, complex, normal human being.

56. "Mean Girls:" Yay or Nay?

...A lot of people whose opinions I trust told me that movie was great, and Tina Fey (she will be mine... oh yes, she will be mine) wrote it, so I had sort-of high expectations, but I thought it out-and-out sucked.
It was one of those movies that THINKS it's a parody of run-of-the-mill high school movies, but is in fact just a run-of-the-mill high school movie itself. To even think about comparing it with "Heathers" is heresy, pure and simple.
Still, Tina Fey is a goddess who descends once a week to give us some fake news, and spends the rest of her time sipping ambrosia on a cloud, and the cloud itself also wears sexy glasses, so I'll assume that there was a bunch of legitimately funny stuff in it originally that they had to cut to keep it PG-13 or something.

Anyone care to defend it? Am I missing something?
