18. Castanets: Best ass song ever

That was a minor hit here in Chicago a couple of years ago. I think Alejandro's version if better, but LLB do a good cover. Stevie Earle and John Cale steal Por Vida, IMO.

But Tony Villanueva left the band last year. Although they still play, I wonder if they'll miss Tony long term.

I have everything they ever put out. I even have cassettes they sold when they played for free somewhere.

And they came out with an album last year that had some good songs on it.

Also, these aren't particularly new, but lately I've been listening to a lot of Hillbilly Idol, Doloreans (Violence in the Snowy Fields is a great album) and Steve Pride, who played with Wilco in the mid 90s. His song "The Darker Side of Life" is one of the best songs of the decade, imo.

daily planet was good, but for some reason, my favorite album of his is "viva satellite". excellent roots rock album. he played in pittsburgh on that tour, and i still want to kick myself for missing it. i had free tickets, but ended up having to do something else that particular night.

That's actually the last album of his that I have, though I have a few tracks off Happy to be Here and New Connection as well as Beer Run off of the live album. I agree with you about the roots rock sound, and I think he's continued to hone that. But I guess the reason I prefer the first two albums is because the lyrics are so sharp and also about topics that hit close to heart. Daily Planet has a lot of political flavor, and Tension off of Step Right Up covered the late 90s pretty well, but on Satellite it seemed like he moved away from that a little. I'd still like to pick up the new album, though.

How would you rate it against the other two that I don't have?

sorry for the lateness in the reply, and for bumping this thread back to the top -- i've been offline since yesterday afternoon.

re: todd's last few albums, i'm right where you are: aside from the newest album (east nashville), the only other ones i have are daily planet and viva satellite. after satellite, i think MCA dropped him, and i unintentionally didn't pick anything up after that (partly because i couldn't find anything online after the MCA thing happened). after i dug out satellite late last year and listened to it, i looked online, found his new website and saw that he's been pretty active, so i picked up the newest one (there are samples of all the songs on his site, www.toddsnider.net ). i think that the new one holds up pretty damned well (and to keep it semi-political, the track "conservative christian right wing republican straight white american males" is hilarious and catchy, but pretty heartfelt). i'd definitely recommend picking it up. apparently todd has been addicted to oxycontin for a long time, almost died from an OD, and recently got clean halfway through the new album, and i think that you can hear that process in the songs.

i'm hoping i get to see him live at some point in the near future.
