sigh... kitty crisis

Went into the kitchen a couple hours ago and found my old girl, Polly, laying on the floor. Not too unusual. But I smelled cat shit. Now she HAS been known on occasion to go inside. I looked around everywhere and couldn't find it. I went over to her and picked her up, and it was all behind her and under her, and she was dead-limp in my hands.

She has diabetes - her first instance of hypoglycemic shock. I really thought she was gonna die. I rubbed some Caro syrup on her gums and teeth, cleaned her up and rushed her to the emergency vet.

$600 later, she's recovering at the hospital. A lot more perked up. Seems she has either a bad infection in her pancreas, or a tumor. Sigh.... I'll know more tomorrow.

That must be hard dealing with a pet & diabetes.. I can barely get Sara to hold still for her eye medicine.. I hope she is better tomorrow, and that it's just an infection ..

it was pretty scary. I thought for sure she was dying on me.

It was nice to see her perked up a lot before I left the hospital - she was resting comfortably between a couple of heating pads and recognized me.

I'm calming down with a glass of wine now ;)

and it'll climb higher if she has to stay another day, or if we decide to do an ultrasound to look for a tumor. That'll add another $300 or so.

FWIW, I have a friend whose cat has diabetes. At first it was a bit difficult but now she gives the cat his shot on a daily basis with no problem whatsoever. The cat gives her no problem because he knows the shot makes him feel better. You can get this down to an easy-to-handle routine in time.

Yeah, 600 is a lot of dough but there is no way I'd not spend it. Animal friends are just too precious.

Yeah, Polly's great about her shots. I've been giving them to her a few months now. she shows up right on time and never complains.

This is the first hypoglycemic episode, and it was scary. The vet said the infection probably brought it on.

And yes, I have three cats and I'd spend a fortune on any of 'em.

The sonogram is an excellent idea. Their pancreases can become absessed very easily, and that requires aggressive treatment.

14. Think positive, Dookus..

A year ago, when we took in Willie, he followed Skunkie around like a little shadow..

We noticed one day, that Skunkie could not walk more than a few steps, before collapsing.. He could barely breathe.. We were sure that he was dying.. I raced him to the vet and the vet felt his abdomen, and gave me "that look".. He said that it felt like a large "mass" in his abdomen, and when they are that size, they are usually malignant.. I was devastated, but told him to take ultrasound/xrays..whatever to find out..

He came back in a few minutes later, with a big ole smile on his face..Why???

I had just paid $250.00 to find out that my cat was literally FULL OF SHIT.. He was severely constipated..

You see, he is a very "shy" cat, and every time he went to the litterbox room, Willie would tag along, and Skunkie cannot "perform" with an audience..

He had an enema, and some antibiotics, just in case, and every time he headed for the litter room, we had to grab Willie and wait until Skunkie came out, before we could let the little rascal loose..

I went in there expecting the worst, and left with a whole different attitude..

15. Take heart

2 years ago, my wife's cat suddenly experiences great pain while walking and stopped moving around. We took him to our local vet and he referred us to the Vet. school associated with the local university. It turned out that he had a back injury (near his tail) that apparently happened when one of our other cats knocked over the chair in our bedroom. While they were at it, though, they also discovered that Putzin has diabetes and Addison's disease. We didn't expect him to live much longer, and in fact, the folks at the Vet. school wanted to 'put him down' right away. We decided that he would stay with us, at home, until such time as euthanasia became 'necessary'. Putzy went with my wife when she went home for Christmas, telling me as she went out the door that she had a Vet. at home that would come to her Mom's house. I admit that I said a number of prayers while they were gone, and made a sloppy mess of myself when I saw boht of them bouncing up the stairs two weeks later. He is still with us, is happy, talky, and playing with the others. The folks at the Vet. school have earned my unending ire for pushing to have him 'put down'. We are still paying for his hospitalization, but it was well worth it. we also have three others, our 'fur children'. Take heart, with proper medication, Polly should be almost as good as new; they are amazing animals.

called the vet. Her blood sugar is back in the right range and she's eating well.

So that's good news.

24. Update....

Polly's home now.

A little wobbly, but she's eating, grooming, and begging me for food right now, so I guess that's good.

I have to schedule an ultrasound to see if she does, in fact, have a tumor, but for today, she's OK.
