Are there any current, new rock bands who you really like???

Are there any bands that you really think kick ass, that seem to be bucking the anti-creative, corporate trend of the current MTV/ClearChannel music culture of today??

I have one. It's a band called The Bronx. I really like their sound (it's a primitive-style hard-core with some hints of grunge), and it sounds very creative, it doesn't sound cookie-cutter or influenced by the interests of radio or record companies.

Any diamonds in the rough that you like out there today??

I've just heard a couple of songs by them, but they are good from what I've heard.

I do a lot of traveling and I listen to 6 different rock stations in my adventures. The two in my hometown are owned by Clear Channel and they play very little in the way of original sounding music. One is a classic rock station that will play new bands if they sound like AC/DC. The other markets itself as a new rock station, but they play about 50% songs from the 90s. I even heard a song that's 20 years old being played on there. And the new rock they play is those cookie cutter type bands that all sound like they could be the same musicians. They play an inovative song every once in a while and if it catches on they kill it by playing it 2 times an hour.

Further up the road there are two stations that are not owned by Clear Channel and they are both considerably better than the two in my home town, but they still have a tendency to overplay songs and even though they have more diverse programming they still play a lot of stuff that sounds the same.

Still further up the road is a classic rock station that claims to play 50 minutes of music an hour, but they break for commercials every two songs and the music that they do play is cheesie. In the same town is a new rock station that really does play new rock and they are the best of the 6 stations. But they do tend to play some bubblegum and I wish they would start playing a metal song or two. They could be heavier.

but I don't think it's due to getting old. There really isn't much to like unless you have a good radio station that will play a lot of original sounding stuff.

I like some old stuff as well as new. I just bought the Rush "Retrospectives 1" cd and put in an order for a new band called Killswitch Engage. None of the tunes on either one of those albums gets played on the radio a lot in my home town. Well except for maybe one Killswitch Engage tune and "Spirit of the Radio."

17. System of a Down Has a Very Interesting Sound

and Offspring isn't all that bad. Those are my daughter's bands (she also likes the Killers). In general, modern music is a wasteland. But there seem to be a few signs of rebellion.

20. I like System of a Down, too

One of those groups whose songs get stuck in your head very easily, but even if you read the lyrics (at least in my case) you still don't have a clue what the songs are about half the time. I like a lot of their political stuff, though; there's nothing cryptic about the lyrics in "Boom!"

They're supposed to be coming out with a new album in a couple months (I think in April or so).

I don't really keep up with today's music. I prefer to listen to my old cds and tapes, and local stuff. One band that did stand out to me, which I consider recent is System of A Down. Someone gave it to me as a gift about a year or so ago. God I love this band! Toxicity has been in my car cd for the past several weeks now. Another band which I consider recent although they're not a new band, is Cake. Prolonging the Magic and Comfort Eagle both kick major ass! I've been listening to these two cds alot as well.

The rest of the cds that have been in my car recently are old stuff like Simon and Garfunkel, Jethro Tull, Hank Williams, Fishbone, Judas Priest, Nina Simone, and various cdrs of local bands' music.

I love Chumbawamba, but they've been around forever and are the god-parents of anti-corporate, creative music. (Don't let Tubthumper put you off...)

Since I like EBM, basically my collection is of non-corporate music.

Internet radio is our savior. Spiderpower Web Radio is the one we listen to most; they play
goth, trance, goa, EBM, synthpop, electro.... Basically, anyone they're playing is not a commercial darling.
