Snarky Rapture comment
I dropped off my older son for practice today instead of picking him up. Half-way home my younger son realized his brother wasn't in the car anymore and spaced that we had dropped him off instead of picking him up.

"Where's Bud?" said younger son.

"He got Raptured," I said. "Looks like it's you and me."

Younger son was not amused. He retaliated by telling me the entire plot to Doom.

2. LOL!
Oh geez, I can see this happening to me in a few years. At the moment I'm merely subjected to the entire plot of Spy Kids.

4. At least the plot of Doom has to do with Demons from Hell.
So he wasn't THAT far off. Presumnig we're talking about the classic 3d shooter and not that shit for balls movie they are making.

Cybernetic Wheelchair.

5. Yes, he was talking about the game. The demons were why he brought it up
He never misses an opportunity to angle for a game he's not allowed have. His reasoning appeared to be this: Silly people think that Doom is bad because it's about demons, but since the good guys are fighting the demons, the silly people have it all wrong, so can he have the game?

I responded that the plot of Doom sounded kind of like Milton's "Paradise Lost."

He said, "So, can I have the game?"

I said, "No, but I think you should read 'Paradise Lost.'"

6. Your reply ROCKED!
Now if only every adult in this country did that instead of buying their kids video games...

8. Make a deal with him.

If he reads Paraside Lost, and understands it enough to talk with you about it, he can have Doom III. Which is actually a very interesting take on the classic shooter, since you have to use a flashlight to view your surroundings, and the use of said flashlight forces you to disarm. Or, if you prefer, tell him he can have Half-Life 2, which is far, far lower on mature content (and a bit of a better game, might I add).

9. A-ha! Thank you for that tip!
I'll ask him about Half-Life 2 and tell him I heard it was a superior game.

By the time he finished Paradise Lost he will be old enough to get Doom (he's eleven now).

10. Quite welcome.
HL2 is still the same genre. A first person shooter, make no mistake. But it's much bigger on puzzles and problem solving (such as having to literally build bridges out of objects you find to cross levels) and much lower on hell spawned demons that attempt to tear out your entrails with lashes of fire. It does still have some jumpy segments, and some creepy monsters, though nothing on the same scale as Doom III, and nothing that an 11 year old shouldn't be able to handle.

If I had an 11 year old, and I was going to give them one of the two, I would definitely select HL2.

11. It's a good plan. I'll haul out my copy of Paradise Lost
This will be fun. PL is a great adventure story with all kinds of fantastic details that should appeal to young boys. I just won't tell him that it is considered "classic literature." That's always a big mistake.

I'll tell him it was banned.
