My kid just read a "Time for Kids" article on Dr. MLK and he's furious.

The article ends with Bush, last year, laying the wreath on Dr. King's grave. My kid LOST his mind. He is raging about "that warmonger" Bush visiting the grave of the "peace lover" MLK.

My son is homeschooled. Unlike the stereotypes perpetuated by many here, I am a liberal parent who is giving my son a liberal education in arts (and yes, he does the three Rs too). We have done a whole unit on Martin Luther King today. Monday, we will take part in our county's MLK celebrations. We are going to take the bus tour to important civil rights sites here.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of my son.

10. I'm not sure when it is age appropriate but the "Eyes on the Prize" series

on PBS should be seen by all Kids.

I stumbled on it at around 11 and was shocked. I thought it was things that happened 100's of years ago. I was even more shocked when I found out this stuff was going on when my parents where young adults. (I was born in 1969)

7. Well, I face the opposite stereotype when I deal

with people who homeschool and most freeper-types. I went to a public school, so apparently I'm an idiot. I just don't let it bother me.

9. I would prefer my son be in public school.

However, he was physically abused by a teacher's aide, against whom I filed charges, and then the next week he was tested for a "learning disability," even though he had the highest standardized testing grade in his grade.

The retribution against him, because I filed charges against the aide, was hurting him emotionally. I had to bring him home.

Oh, and there is that little matter about the mock election his class held. He told his social studies teacher that he was for Kerry, and she replied, "Kerry is a baby killer." (This has been told to me not only by my son, but by two other students who saw this.)

Anyway, I couldn't take the teachers lashing out at my kid anymore. He's home, he's happy, and he's learning. :-)

Talk about poisoning children's minds. My cousin had a similar experience with her daughter, all though not sure where she heard it..... The little girl is 9. Asked her Mom who she was voting for and she said John Kerry. The little girl was horrified and said "Mom!!! He wants our soldiers to die and to take babies out of women's stomachs and kill them". My cousin (completely dumbfounded) stated that in no way does Senator Kerry want to do either of those things and that whoever told her that is very wrong. She's such a sweet little girl... broke my heart when my cousin told me this - I wanted to physically confront the mfer who put that in her head.

The "offical visit" to the grave meant the trip was paid for by taxpayers.

Time For Kids is pure propaganda and here in Maryland they actually expect the parents to pay for the school year's subscription. After reading some of the articles a few years back when my daughter was in 5th grade, I told the teacher that they were biased and propagandish and that if my daughter had to write a summary of the article, be prepared to read a total disection of it; with facts to back up the rebuttal of the piece.

But then, I am constantly having to give my kids the real story when it comes to "social studies" in MS and HS. It has benifitted them though, because they put their teachers to the test, something I strongly encourage, and they get great grades because it keeps them interested and they like the idea of putting ANY teacher to the test. <g>

Let them read anything, just be there to discuss it with them, stay engaged and they will learn to think critically too. Just make sure you keep yourself informed so you're a step ahead of the game.

son, also! My son is 13 now, and I remember when he was younger and I was teaching him about King and the civil rights movement. He just kept asking why they had separate places for blacks and whites in the south and what the big deal was, he wasn't satisfied with any explanation. He just couldn't understand it, the injustice of it was so simple to him.

And for those of you who thing homeschooling is only done by freepers and the religious right, that is not at all an accurate stereotype. Many, many homeschooling families are like Maddy, and they do an excellent job overall. There's nothing at all wrong with homeschooling if it's done right.
