All the amenities of NYC and Chicago (well almost all) but much better weather.

We have:
- Diverse local economy
- Thriving local culture (2nd best small theater after NY)
- Major Universities (UCLA, USC, CalTech)
- Generally a very progressive local government

The rail mass transit system is pulling together - you can actually get places on it. Urban areas are coming back - downtown and Hollywood are attacting business and residents. Air pollution is MUCH improved over the last 30 years.

Boston,Massachusetts - Never been - I hear it's nice!
New York City,New York - Never been - but I want to go!
Chicago,Illinois - I love Chicago!
Atlanta,GA - Never been - some good people there, though!
San Francisco,California - I liked San Francisco and the whole Bay Area a lot
Phoenix,Arizona - Only been through the airport there. There are other places in AZ I want to see.
Philadelphia,Pennsylvania - Didn't see much while I was there, but I had a good time with good people. I'm going back.
Seattle,Washington - Spent a weekend there once - loved it - going back, hopefully.
Honolulu,Hawaii - Lived here 3 years when I was a kid. Need to go back as an adult to fully "get it".
Portland,Maine - There's a Portland, Maine? ;-) Kidding...

So...from this list...I choose Chicago...:shrug:

I've spent time in many places in the States for many reasons, and I haven't found a better place to live. As for the list, I gave my vote to NYC. A great place to live, work, play and vacation, though it takes way too long to get out of town.

27. Detroit wasn't on it, so I picked NYC.

Every American city I've been to has had it's features. I ate some awesome food in Atlanta (Rocky's and Sundowner Inn), I had a lot of fun in NYC and Chicago over the years, and took two great vacations to San Fran some time ago, which had great terrain and views, and has some really good architechture and interesting people.

31. My choice had to be San Francisco.

And no, my choice had nothing to do with the fact that SF is Sappho's city.

When I first went to the US, I went down south to Shreveport LA, and then to St Louis, but when I saw SF for the first time it so reminded me of my home town of Melbourne. From the Victorian homes to the bay.

Since then I have seen lots of US cities including NYC (when the twin towers were still there), but I didn't enjoy NYC as much. That was most likely some sort of culture shock thing that brought that reaction out in me.

In Australia we don't have such huge cities. Our cities are very clean in comparasin, and defenately not as many people.

Some people hate Boston, but I absolutely love it. And New York, is, New York. It never gets old, as many times as I've been there. Always something new.

I lived there for over twenty years. Only big city in the US dominated by Hell-Bound-Liberals (we voted down a new City Hall because the Feng Shui was lousy).

Second and third places had to go to Key West, Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Hint: the more a city not only tolerates, but cultivates its harmless eccentrics, the more amusing it is. And the more it embraces gays, the more liveable it is for us Bohemians!

If this poll was "worst American city", I'd have no problem voting for Atlanta. Worst traffic, worst urban planning, worst sprawl, and so on (and I can say this, I live in Atlanta). Atlanta is a cultural void, too...a landlocked corporate city with precious few redeeming qualities (but it's still better than just about anywhere else in GA, and the next closest REAL city is Nashville...)

I don't know why. I've never been there, but I have this insane longing to visit -- sometime when the Bush family is out of town. I'm sure that autumn is spectacular, but crowded and touristy.

Any other good times of the year to visit? Or are they all good?
