Wearing jeans with a sportcoat is a hick thing to do, right?

I was watching "what not to wear" last night. ANd that's what they put on the guy.

Granted, it was better than the shit he was wearing.

Blue jeans with a sport coat look hideous and stupid, though. It's sort of the mullet of wardrobe - short on top to placate your boss, long in the back 'cuz yer a crayzeee rock and roll party animal, WOOOOO! Blue jeans and a sport coat, similar vibe, different locations on one's person. I'd never do it.

5. living in TX, I never thought of it as just a hick thing,...

but I guess it is! Austin is so damn casual, that the normal work attire for men seems to be a polo shirt and khaki's but for the extra formal look, a sportscoat and jeans will work. Although, it seemed more popular a decade ago than it is now.

If the man is very fit and has the butt/legs for the jeans -- and the sport coat is well-fitted to show off shoulders but not too tight -- then it can look great. I wouldn't say "hick." Actually it can be a very smart look. Even a California type look.

Now if you're talking about some fat redneck in jeans just throws on a cheap sport coat so he'll be seated in a restaurant...OK...yeah, that does look bad. The less toned the body, the more expensively tailored the clothes in order for the man to look "polished."

guess it depends on the sportcoat (and, of course, the jeans). A Harris tweed, say, looks all right with decently broken-in (NOT dark blue) jeans. But a blazer or something more formal-looking than tweed doesn't really work.

and is especially good if its an expensive jacket & dress shirt, and "wrong" shoes (my old lineman's boots are my pick) You do have to be a guy that can and does wear jeans. IIRC Calvin Klein wears the jeans/jacket alot.

The whole idea of something 'wrong' keeps it from being a dress-up uniform. But if you are watching "what not to wear", not even the REAL BBC one, you are beyond help!


And the f'n cube dwellers wearing the leather jackets with their dockers!(Dockers are the work of the devil.) I put my leather away, it had served me well for 20 years. I even quit wearing earing's when all the wanna bees started.

Personally, I think it's a look that works on some people. I dislike the idea that fashion has to have rules. I certainly don't dress in any sort of conventional manner but I don't really care what anyone else thinks, anyway. I like the way I look, my hubby likes the way I look and I'm not breaking any laws or stopping traffic.

Fashion is whatever pleases the person wearing it. If you don't want to wear jeans and a sport coat, don't wear them. What difference does it make if someone else does, though? I personally don't care for pantsuits but I don't care if women want to wear them.

It's like those silly rules about not wearing white after Labor Day. Why the hell not?
