In the 4th grade student council election. I haven't voted for anyone for public office yet.

In case you're wondering, I pulled what I considered to be a surprise victory, without any help from Diebold :) The guy I defeated was a stand-up fellow and he got to serve half of my term after I transferred schools. I like to think we both stuck to the high road in our 30 minute long campaign.

That was the first election I ever voted in. I was 22; I turned 21 in December 1970, which was about the time the constitutional amendment was passed giving 18-year-olds the right to vote. I am proud to say that I have never voted for a Republican for president, and only once for anything. That was in 1976, when I voted for John Danforth the first time he ran for the Senate. Now, I would crawl across broken glass to vote for the candidate for ANY office who has the best chance of preventing the Republican from winning that office.

I was bummed that I couldn't vote in that election - not that it would have mattered. Mondale only won West Virginia and Minnesota!

Then in 1988, I was in the Navy overseas and honestly didn't believe my vote would count, so I didn't vote. (Shame)

So the first Presidential candidate I voted for was Bill Clinton in 1992. I voted for a Republican that year, too. Her name was Amy Salerno and she was running for a local office in my neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. She was wonderful and I'm glad she won. I have a feeling she isn't a Republican, anymore.

It was my first election, my only exposure was the debates and I thought Perot kicked ass. I liked Clinton too, but thought that Perot would be a refreshing change, not being a career polititian and all. At least he was a successful businessman who made his own fortune...unlike Shrubbie!

Perot was pro-choice, that was and still is my biggest hot button issue. He's a crazy little fucker! I certainly did not see Perot as the alternative to bush sr.

I had it in my head that we should have a three tiered Presidency, one for the economic issues, one for foreign affairs, and one for domestic policy, and (AT THE TIME)thought that Perot could handle the economy, bush could take foreign affairs, and Clinton could take domestic...I now realize the folly of my younger years!

Now I almost wish we could change the constitution so clinton could run again! :-P
