THE PUNISHER IS HOT ON THE TRAIL of his latest victim, a two-bit criminal who barely escapes to make the next train out of Union Station. Melvin Jay -- part-time comedian, full-time drug lord -- catches the next train to Riverdale, intent on making the peaceful town the next base of his operations.
Unbeknownst to anyone at this point, Melvin bears an uncanny resemblance to one Archibald Andrews ("Archie" to his friends), a red-headed teenager whose current biggest worry in life is finding someone to go to the school's 1950s sock hop. Two hit men, Binky and Buzzy, arrive in Riverdale and follow Archie, assuming he's the man they were sent to kill.
Meanwhile, the Punisher uses his persuasion skills on one of Melvin's former associates to find out where he's gone. Armed to the teeth, he and his computer-whiz pal Microchip cruise into Riverdale to find Melvin Jay and bring him in to the authorities (a departure from his usual M.O. of executing criminals, since he wants information from
Melvin on his drug contacts).
In Riverdale, Melvin networks with Mr. Lodge (Veronica's rich father), posing as the head of a pharmaceutical firm. Veronica invites him to the school dance to spite Archie, who is soaking his sorrows in a malted shake when Binky and Buzzy make their move and take him and Jughead for a ride. The Punisher intercepts, sticks a gun in Archie's face, and realizes he's got the wrong guy.
