This thread was inspired the thread about truisms.

Have any favorite goofy sayings?

16. it should really be worded the other way--you can't eat your cake and...
..still have it.

I think that's what it's supposed to mean (you can't eat it AND hoard it---just one or the other).

4. "If I were you, I'd do this."
I never liked this phrase, because if you were me you would do EXACTLY, to the letter, to the microgram, exactly what I would do, because you'd be me! I think it's better to say, "If I was in your place..."

that's actually quite profound. Do we need to get into a deep philosphical discussion about that?

12. my pet peeve:
``You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time.''

this is often cited as a profound piece of wisdom, but imho it misses the point. in a democracy, you never have to fool all the people all the time. to win, it's sufficient to fool most of the people at election time.

18. My least favorite sayings
"If you took all the money in the country and divided it equally, the same people who were rich before would have it back in a year." (And you know this because...?)

"Hey, if I don't do it, someone else will." (The sign of an out-and-out shameless sociopath. He's usually referring to something that is technically legal but highly unethical.)

"Those soldiers are in Iraq fighting for your freedom to protest the war." (If you believe that, you really haven't been paying attention.)

"Public education is lousy because there's no competition." (So tell me again about how students in other countries get higher test scores-- students in other countries who almost all attend their nations' public schools?)

Here's a circular bit of logic that is common in the Pacific Northwest:

"Oregon will never run out of trees. Why, the companies keep replanting all the time."

"So why aren't you limiting logging to the replanted forests?"

"Because the wood from the old growth trees is much higher quality."

"So what will you do when all the old growth is gone?"

"Oregon will never run out of trees..." (Repeat, rinse.)

25. is our children learning?
a surplus means there'll be money left over, otherwise it wouldnt be called a surplus.

families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream.

if im president, we're going to have emergency room care, we're going to have gag orders.

its one thing about insurance, thats a washington term.

if affirmative action means what i just described - what i'm for - then im for it.

our priorities is our faith.

30. "No left turn unstoned"
"If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?"

Well, that's a pretty depressing hypothetical, maybe I would.

"It doesn't rain but it pours."

I've noticed a whole lot of drizzle in between.

"Parents: the anti-drug."

From what I can tell, there are a whole lot of parents on drugs of one sort or another.

31. Some of these I had never heard until I moved to Missouri
"I am so broke I can't pay attention."

"I'll smack you into next week."

"I'm fuller than a tick on a cow's belly."

My mom said this one to my rather rebellious sister, "I hope you have a kid just like you." (My guess is she was thinking of cloning but I could be wrong)

When my mom got REALLY, REALLY upset at a smart aleck comment made by one of her loving children, "You'll be picking your fur up out of the wall."
