I live in the draftiest house ever built...I swear I think the only reason why the builders put walls up was to prevent people from stealing our stuff...otherwise they serve no purpose! I'm huddled up in a blanket as I type. It's not easy to type in a blanket!

15. Rice socks are a cheap alternative!

fill a tube sock with regular rice and knot closed, put in the micro for sets of 30 seconds until it's the temp you want, presto, flexible heaters that last for about 30 minutes! Careful not to overheat, they can get REALLY hot if you don't pay attention. I usually end up doing them for two mins to get the temp I like.

add lavender oil or other scents you like to make it even better, the heat activates the smell!

9. here is a tip

my house is about 64 degrees in the winter (too damn expensive to heat a big old house in the Chicago winters) and the best thing I had was one of those foot bath massager things. I got an old one at a garage sale for 50 cents, and it has a massage thing, and HEAT. I don't turn on the massage thing (noisy), and I don't put in water. I just keep it under my desk and put my sock feet in it. The heat is joyous, especially because the feet get cold after sitting at a computer for a long time.


Now my dorm room is 80+ degrees, and I can only be comfortable in a tank top :/

... drop by your local home improvement store and buy a case of caulk (about $20 for the medium-grade stuff) and a caulk gun ($5).

Fill all those cracks and gaps that let the cold in with nice gooey caulk. Yes, it is a messy job, but otherwise you are just heating the neighborhood instead of your house :)

17. I suggest silicone 2. It is more expensive but worth the price.

I have done several rehabs and updates and have decided never to use any other type of caulk.

20. When we put new vinyl siding on our

house, we left the old siding on which included whatever insulation was already there. We caulked all the laps in the old siding, put r-board over it, caulked the gaps between the sheets, put the new vinyl siding on over the r-board. I can turn the heat up in the morning and then after about an hour, turn it off for most of the day, the house holds the heat that good.

By doing the siding like that, we put new windows in all around because they had to be set out a bit because of the extra thickness of the wall so now I have window sills inside for plants and stuff.

Outside noise is a minimum now and the house is much easier to heat.
