Quitting Smoking Update
A couple of weeks ago, I had mentioned on an earlier thread that I intented to stop smoking at some point. Well the good news is (hopefully) that will happen this friday, 10/3.

I started on a prescription for wellbutrin (similar to zyban) last week and my quit date is 24 hrs. away. I hope this time I stop for good.

Wish me luck!

:smoke::argh:

1. I wish you all the best. I so admire you for quiting. I do not smoke.
However, I have heard from friends and relatives that have smoked and quit that it is hard but so worth it. Check in often as I know there are folks here that can relate and help. I am hoping the best for you.

I tried Wellbutrin and it worked...then s*it happened and I started smoking again. I tried to go back on Wellbutrin but, it gave me nightmares!

I need to try to quit - again. :(

3. I've had really weird dreams too
No nightmares, just odd things, the strangest had to be seeing myself doing things that i ended up doing a couple days later...now the question is whether the dreams influenced my actions or not...

I think i'm going to be fine for friday. I've noticed the last couple of days that I haven't been smoking as much, and I usually dont finish it all the way.

5. Hey, alright man!
I quit on Sept. 15th (a Monday). Really early in the morning.
Weird thing was that as I was smoking my last cigarette I saw a UFO. I shit you not. Posted on it in this forum that same night too.
Anyway...It's been....I dunno almost 17 days now. I had been smoking a pack a day of American Spirits, which tend to be really strong. But, I got the patch thing going, and I gotta tell you that it works great.
If you've got the will to quit, if you really want to (it helps to make promises to friends and family) and the patch system, you'll be able to do it. I promise. I was having small urges but I was able to ignore them. And they've gone away now, too, for the most part.
But, yeah, I've been having dreams about smoking. More out of worrying that I'm going to start again than actually wanting one, though.
Good luck buddy! (But it ain't THAT bad ;) )

6. Wellbutrin, and Nicorette gum for three months
I'm five days shy of a year. It ain't easy, but it's nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be....I was over a pack a day.

However, I always breathe deeply when passing through outdoor smokers' gulags or in passing at bars.

YOU CAN DO IT!

8. That's great!
It sounds like you are committed and that's the biggest step. It's been a year and a half for me. All of the stories here about people quitting and the support and tips they received here is what finally motivated me. Well, that, and the fact I started to develop allergy-induced asthma.

I've seen a LOT of people posting lately about quitting and I think it's fantastic. You CAN do it. And if you hit a rough spot, just post here and you'll have at least a dozen people supporting you through that craving or rough spot.

Good luck!

9. Good luck
www.quitnet. com is a very helpful site for people who are trying to give up smoking.

It's been more than 5 1/2 years since I smoked. It's the second best thing I ever did. (The first best thing was having my son.)

Wellbutrin is not only similar to Zyban, but it is the exact same drug.

Zyban got me through it, 199 days ago....
You can do it. Just don't think about it, get rid of the ashtrays, etc.

And just think of ALL the $$$$$ You're screwing RJR and your state's revenue department out of! Cool!

14. The patch was VERY helpful for the first week or so, but only during
the day. I used it like I used to smoke, during the daytime only.

I quickly started leaving it on for less and less time, to ease myself off the nicotine cravings.

There is the physical habit, the nicotine drug that has to be purged from your system, which the patch helps, then the actual habit, which the wellbutrin helps with.

Then there is your own will and determination. That is the most powerful of all. As a former nicotine addict I salute you. I smoked on and off for almost 25 years and quit for the last time over a year ago. I just don't want to smoke anymore. The thought of it makes me puke... so there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it ain't the glowing ember of a cigarette. It's saving $5 a day on a filthy, smelly republican supporting habit.

GOOD LUCK!

15. Make it a birthday present to me!
I planned to quit on 10/3 as well, 2001, my 33rd birthday. But, I quit a day early, which means I just made 2 years.

Good luck.

16. Quitting the Smoking
Hi I'm new so I've been mostly reading all the threads but I have to say I hope you succeed. I know how difficult it could be at times but just remember that your health is the most important thing. No to mention cigarrette smoke is the most disgusting thing in the world!!!
I wish you luck!

I'm going to hold to my promise, at 12am 10/3, I will stop. I want to thank everyone for your encouraging words of support. I don't know why but I feel like this time it will happen.
