1. Your reply will be 23?
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 01:53 AM by TheZoo
If you reply, and like I wrote before:

Has Fermat's Last Theorem (x^n + y^n = z^n, where n > 2) been proven? I won't give the alternate question, since I know it will be false ("Will I get over my loss"?)

And congrats on making 5K, and I know you'll do :-)

<edited to prevent the Grammar Nasties> :-)

2. Fermat's Last Theorem
Is total bullshit! That Fermat didn't know what the hell he was doing.

Just kidding, I don't know anything about Fermat or his theorem. I was an English major for crissake! :-)

As far as getting over your loss, do any of us every truly get over our losses? I know I never do, they're always with me in some form.

Thanks for being my first response! 23 to go!

5. I got my BA in BS....no wait
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 01:43 AM by TheZoo
That's my B.S. in Business Admin. I get confused nowadays.

Pierre de Fermat

Pierre Fermat's father was a wealthy leather merchant (A rich @$$hole) and second consul of Beaumont- de- Lomagne. Pierre had a brother and two sisters (who probably gave him Medieval noogies every night) and was almost certainly brought up in the town of his birth (so his mommy wouldn't let him out of the house) Although there is little evidence concerning his school education it must have been at the local Franciscan monastery. (so he definitely needed some help in the ways of life)

Cut to the chase - he ended up becoming a pretty decent Judge and used math as a hobby. He was reading some dead Greek author's book and he wrote the formula in the margin, and the bugger didn't even give a proof.

English major, huh? What's this quote from? No, not the original text :-)

The sight is dismal;
And our affairs from England come too late:
The ears are senseless that should give us hearing,
To tell him his commandment is fulfill'd..

9. I don't know that quote
It reads familiar, but I can't place it. Even though I still read voraciously, it's been 16 years since I wrote a paper on anything. Sigh.....

I don't really have a favorite author(male or female), more like a stable of favorites for different styles & genres. I guess if you put a gun to my head and made me choose one, I'd have to pick William Shakespeare, just for his amazing understanding of human nature, both noble and groundling. There's nothing quite like seeing one of his plays masterfully performed. I still remember seeing Maggie Smith and Brian Bedford do Much Ado About Nothing in Stratford, Ontario in 1978. I was only 13, but it completely blew me away. I tried to read everyone of his plays that summer.

I love Jane Austen (she's much funnier than people give her credit for), Douglas Adams, Thomas Hardy, TC Boyle, Donna Tartt, Douglas Copeland (particularly Life After God), Emily & Charlotte Bronte, etc., etc.. I could name a zillion more, but that would make this post so long, I'd never get to 5000. I studied more classical English lit, but I try very hard to buy modern writers since I don't feel that they get the readership they deserve.

The Oprah book club annoys me (mainly because she always seems to pick a book I've read, so then I have to listen to legions of Oprah-files talk about it inanely for a month), but I think it's been a positive thing for readers and the publishing industry in general. It seems like more people are reading these days and that has to be good. :-)

18. It's from Billy S.'s almost famous tragedy
"Hamlet" It's my only Shakespeare experience, I was "English Ambassador". As practice, our coach made us watch "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead". I fyou haven't seen it, you SHOULD! It's pre-psychotic Tim Roth and Gary Oldman.

19. Hell, I stage managed it in college
I also got a degree in theater. I love Tom Stoppard.

Hamlet has never been one of my favorites. The language is beautiful (of course), but the misogyny of the character always bothered me immensely.

Though the way things are around here, I could probably vote for you in California *and* vote in my local elections here. Chicago has a saying on election day, "Vote early, vote often!". ;-) You Californians could learn a thing or two from our Democratic process.

I'm having a good enough time with our democratic process. The one that requires me to get more than 50% of the vote to keep my job and my opponent only 5% to take it.
And he doesn't even have to debate me.

Looks like you only have 4 to go.

Comedy: Much Ado About Nothing (I'm sentimental, it's the first Shakespearean play I ever saw performed)
Tragedy: Romeo and Juliet (that language!)
History: Richard III (though some call it a tragedy rather than a history)

23. CUBS!!
I love a loser. Even though they have a shot this time, I still love them. I can't imagine what will happen to this city if they win. I think it might get sucked into some black hole in space or disappear in a ball of white light or something. Either way, I think the Cubs winning the series is a sure sign of the impending apocolypse. :scared:

28. Congrats!
As far as our other discussion....

I was drawn towards the 2 minor characters Rosencrantz & Guildenstern. I don't know why, it was these two guys that were introduced by the King & Queen, then after a few scenes Hamlet freaks out on his "best friends", then they're sent to England to make sure he's dead.

That's why I like Stoppard's version - he gives the two of them a "life." The movie is great, especially when Claudius and Gertrude start the confusion as to who is who; the lines I like most is after "official" part ends when they receive their instructions: "My too much changed son. Go, some of you / And bring these gentlemen where Hamlet is." Rosencrantz whispers to Guildenstern "I want to go home" and Guildenstern replies "Don't let them confuse you". But it fails. :-(
