Shred the living daylights out of your old important papers. I even found a few tax returns from the 80's. Lot of old bills from my recently deceased uncle, checks, etc. I hauled out 10 tall kitchen trash bags. Oddly enough I found my grandmother alien card from the 40's, they apparently made here get one since she was not naturalized even after living here for 30 yrs then. I think it was the Italian thing, since they were part of the Axis. I kept all the interesting things for my niece.

9. keep your old tax returns

You never know if someday some low level grunt at the IRS will look while filing old returns and so, "hey, historic NY's return from 1983 is missing... they didn't pay for 83! That is $96,000 in penalties..."

(remember, Bush shifted the IRS' focus from auditing big corporations to auditing the little folks...and, being a DU participant, you're probably more likely to be profiled this way...)

along with medical, phone calls, mortgage info.
