My disc will not de-frag. What shall I do?

Oh, you said de-frag. In that case, look to see if any process is running behind your back (e.g. spyware) and terminate it. Defrag should continue all the way.

Or boot into safe mode and defrag from there. Antivirus programs have a knack of preventing defrag from working; and they won't load in safe mode.

Honestly, it's usually a anti-virus program or sys. restore that causes that. Restore is famous for it.

My desk-top got totally fried last week by a power surge. I am considering a Mac laptop. Here is my question: Can a Mac run MS Excel and Money? I absolutely have to run those programs. If Mac can do it .. so can I.

22. Here's what you do:

Sometimes defragmentation gets hung up because there are active programs in the background. You need to shut them down. Do this by hitting Alt+Ctl+Del just ONCE. A list of the active programs should pop up on the screen (here I'm talking Win98, otherwise you're on your own). Left click on any one of the programs and choose "End Task." Continue until they're all gone - except "Explorer." If you shut this one down the system reboots and you have to start all over. When they are all gone but Explorer there are no programs running in the background and you should have better luck with Defrag.

Norton SpeedDisk (defrag by another name) seems to be more sensitive to background programs than the Windows Defragment utility (under Accessories in the Start menu).
