State history in school?

I was talking to a friend of mine from Texas last night and she was talking about when she was in 7th grade they had a Texas history class. When I told her I don't ever remember an Ohio history class back then she said that every state has to take their state history in school.
Do any of you remember taking a class that was just about your state? I don't.

8th Grade.

Colony of GA was founded in Savannah in 1733 by Oglethorpe. See I was paying attention :)

6. Yes, I took Ohio History in middle school ....

Of course this was way back when (late 60's), but I remember it well. I don't know that it was required, but I was told that to receive a diploma in Utah, students must have credit for Utah History courses.

Ohio History was one of my favorite courses in Junior High (next to math and music) - and I still have a keen interest in Ohio History, and would like to collect Ohio History books for a hobby. Anyone have any they'd like to share with me? Or sell?

10. I really don't remember taking it

I was in the 8th grade in 1977-78. Maybe I was just not that interested.
I do like reading Cleveland history and have a few books on that.

17. I grew up in Logan County ....

Lots of Indian lore and legend ... Simon Kenton ... Shawnee history ... and my home was several hundred yards away from indian settlement property (no archealogical work there, though ... Just corn fields and woods ... I still find that curious) - so I was always curious to find the truth behind the legends I'd heard (mostly a bunch of hooey, but cool tales, nonetheless). I suppose that curiosity and keen interest is why I remember the course so clearly.

I think they threw in some of the "Ohio" hot spots during history classes.
I lived in a suburb of Cleveland that had Indians living there. All the names of the streets were Indian names. I never looked in to the history of that area really. I do have some books about that territory, but haven't really looked at them in a while.

Are you still there? My partner is from Cleveland (West side neighborhood - Cleveland address), and I really like that city a lot. Pretty liberal compared to the rest of the state.

7. We took Washington State history in 8th grade

Sadly, they had sanitized it to death, taking out all the good parts (and, oh, there are so many). I really would have been much more interested if, say, Bill Spiedel's "Sons of the Profits" had been our textbook. He's the originator of the Underground Tour in Pioneer Square and dished all the dirt (literally...) on early Seattle.

in 7th grade too. It'll always stand out in my mind cause on the day our Principal had to sub due to an emergency, he told us a good way to remember when Ohio became a state. He was hilarious, saying that we all knew he was an old guy and that he shared his birthday with Ohio, March 1803.

Grew up in Massachusetts. Every years history class would do Plymouth, Boston tea party and generally do a Mass-Centric version of US history. Not much happened in the world after 1850 from what I remember

I had Michigan history in tenth grade (Arthur Hill, '75). I remember that because I took a GED and was in the Army by January of my junior year.

I liked it (the history -- the Army, eh, not so much). Took a lot of Michigan history courses (all I could get) in college.

It wasn't a year- or semester-long class, just a unit built into 8th-grade social studies and 12th-grade government classes. In fact, we had to pass tests on the Illinois and U.S. Constitutions in order to graduate. (They were relatively easy tests, nothing too nit-picky.)

I went to a college prep public school, so I don't know if all the public schools in Ohio required it or not.

32. Yep, we take TX history down here. 7th grade for me too.

My mom swears she had to take TX history in grade school which was pretty freakin' odd considering she lived and went to school in Ohio. Her theory was that not much happened in Ohio so she was forced to learn about TX instead since the history is more interesting. :evilgrin:

I can still recite most of the history of the Bear Flag Revolt off the top of my head, name the last Mexican governor of California, and name all of the missions (I used to know what year each was built, but it's been a couple decades).

FWIW, the curriculum hasn't changed much. My daughter is in 5th grade and her class is doing California history right now. The only real change I've noticed is that they now teach 60-90's history including the California civil rights movement, the environmental movement, Caesar Chavez and the UFW, flower power, and even the Rodney King beating and ensuing LA riots.

I think it's mandated by the State Legislature. (...we...must...all...conform...) And, yes, I have had friends from out of state think this is totally creepy...but the "Texan" mentality is really one of a kind, anyways.

We moved in the middle of 7th grade. I took the first half of Texas history and the second half of New York History.

Needless to say I still get confused to this day and have a strange unshakable connection between the Alamo and Mormons.
