On VH1, he even flipped the bird for that music special commemorating Starship when he had to talk of that song!! :yourock:
"White Rabbit" was supposed to be a sarcastic war of words against the older generation (of her time). There's a great beat, great rhythm, and the words for all their lush sarcasm are poetic and there's even a good chuckle at the end. "Doormouse said... feed your head." And performed with such gusto. It's not only smashing stuff, it's also funny because of how it aims at those the Airplane was persecuting. "Alice in Wonderland", yes, but not in the mere form of dissing a dumb fairytale. It was about the HYPOCRISY of drugs and Airplane was, and is, spot-on with the topic. (today's psychiatric industry instantly comes to mind.) It is as relevant today as it was 39 years ago. Possibly even moreso, but for different reasons. We all know how the drug industry wants us all doped on purple pills, beige diamond shaped pills, round white ones, whatever...
Drugs being bad is one thing, and she and Airplane had used them far more than I ever will, so her experience gives her some cred. But I doubt I'lll understand why she feels embarrased about her past. Almost to an extremely cynical level. Doubly especially as it made her famous. She bucked the system and even spat on it. Any artist of any medium is never a conformist. She would know that better than anyone; she sells artwork too (some of which is quite good, I'll admit.)
Surrealistic Pillow, Crown of Creation, Volunteers - all great stuff.
She's a very interesting person... but very strange with her reversal in attitude.
