1. Do you love living in San Francisco?

8. I like it, on the whole.

I like it enough that, after my first stint here in 1993-94, I decided to move back here again in 1999 and have been here ever since. I do miss my hometown of New York and would certainly consider returning there at some point, but honestly, there's not many other cities I'd rather live in -- perhaps I'd also consider perhaps maybe Chicago or Boston or Seattle, or just any place where you can walk or bike to places and don't absolutely have to own a car to get around.

On the downside, SF is not only expensive but also has a major homeless population, especially as you get closer to Market and/or Mission Streets.

And if so, what neighborhood? I live in south of Market, two blocks away from the Civic Center BART/MUNI station. x( 7th and Market Streets is not the most uplifting place to be in.

I only went to CCSF for a couple of semesters. I started getting my general stuff down. But since I had to work full time, I ended up dropping out.

I loved it however.

I lived in SF (and the east bay) from 1986 - 2000. Most of the time I lived in the Castro.

Noe Valley - 1986 - 1988

Castro - 1988 - 1992

Divisadero - 1992 - 1993

Castro - 1993 - 1995

Union Square (Taylor & Geary) 1995 - 1997

Castro - 1997 - 1998

and it's on Divisidero between Geary and California. Actually those streets are 2 blocks away but I can't recall the exact blocks. Just google or dogpile The Cheesesteak Shop. But if you're at the Phelan and Ocean campus you're a ways away, dang.

Also, either call ahead or go after 2 pm, lunchtime is a madhouse!!

I started in fall 2001, and it looks like they were there during the 2001-02 school year but I can't tell for sure.

Honestly, I didn't even know who Mitchell and Jackson were before you asked (judging from the search I did on Google on them, I take it both of them are pretty major up-and-coming college football names).

For one thing, I don't follow college football. For another, CCSF's football team isn't high on the radar of most of its students. Keep in mind that CCSF is a two-year junior college with all of its students commuting from all over the Bay Area and many are just part-time, so it's not like it has the same "school spirit" unity and athletic pride that four-year universities do.

Having said that, I'm impressed to hear that CCSF's team is actually sending players to the college football ranks. Have either of the two been drafted by the NFL yet?

27. Lance Mitchell will enter this year's draft

and is projected to be picked (last I heard) somewhere in the middle rounds. He was hurt last year and wound up redshirting, which is why he was still playing even after Pasha Jackson left.

Pasha went to the 49ers minicamp as an undrafted free agent, but I don't think he made the team. He was also with the Colts for a little while, but unless I'm mistaken, he didn't stick on an active NFL roster this year. He might have made the practice squad somewhere, though.

It's good fast food and it's food that's fast and good. BTW, if you read Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, In-and-Out is the one fast-food franchise that he actually has anything good to say about -- and he is quite complimentary about the quality and standards of their food.

As for the business leaving SF, its economic impact would be miniscule compared to the tech business downturn of the last few years, which has decimated the job market here. It would, however, make both myself and a lot of the tourists visiting Fisherman's Wharf quite unhappy. There's an In-N-Out on the Wharf, just a few blocks from the Tower Records where I work, and for a while I was eating at In'N'Out every day I was working at Tower.

It probably wouldn't affect Bonds, though. I assume their food doesn't contain steroids. :7

22. Most of my fun revolves around my PC these days.

I use my PC to surf the Internet, listen to mp3's that I've encoded from my CD collection or downloaded from eMusic.com, and rip movie files from my DVD's.

Being a full-time student has absolutely put a major damper on my social life. Before I returned to school, I used to go to house and loft parties with DJ's playing, see bands at live shows, and watch movies in the theater on a very regular basis.

I hardly do any of those things now. In the past twelve months I've seen exactly one live band (the Subhumans) and seen two movies in the theater (F911 and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou). And I don't see my friends as much as I used to before returning to school.

23. SF -- is the Haight like the old days?

24. When you say "old days", do you mean the original Summer of Love?

I'd say not really but sort of.

First of all, the Haight is in two parts, the Upper Haight (the half of Haight Street connecting with Golden Gate Park) and the Lower Haight (which crosses Market).

The Upper Haight is the part with the intersection with Ashbury Street (hence, "Haight-Ashbury"). It's mostly retail businesses, clothing shops, record stores, head shops, and a few bars, with a lot of tourists and shoppers, and a lot of crusty punks and hippies, especially outside Amoeba near the park.

The Lower Haight doesn't have as many retail businesses, but it has a lot more bars and restaurants and cafes. And you won't see as many old-school tie-dye-wearing, Dead-listening hippies here, but a lot of young boho types.

BTW, I ended up going there very briefly and immediately turning back and heading home. I didn't feel like protesting -- I wanted to deal with the whole "Bushit" as little as possible, so I just stayed home and watched "Napoleon Dynamite" instead.

I'm studying computer science at CCSF, so I'm pretty much going the math and physics route for now. I already have a B.A. in political science elsewhere, so I assume I have all my general-ed requirements as far as social science and humanities classes are concerned.

The reason I went back to school even with a bachelor's is that I want to go for a masters in CS and I need to take a whole bunch of core undergrad courses that I didn't take the first time around when I was a student at Wesleyan University (my alma mater).

Do you still live in the zip code that's part of your handle? And where is that? Haight? Sunset? Richmond?

If I find out about a San Francisco DU'ers meet-up, maybe I should consider heading to it.

There are lots and lots of DUers from SF; even more from the Bay Area! As I understand it, SF meet-ups are rare and hard to organize. Maybe the California state forum would be a good place to watch for a gathering? We should touch base via PM about this... :hi:
