Who Is Your Long Distance Carrier?
I've got Sprint with an additional USAA discount on top of their prices.

Are these "no-name" long distance providers any better or cheaper? I keep seeing ads on TV for "IUD" or "IDT" or something like that.

1. IDT

I've heard good things about them, namely the 5 cents/minute rate. I think I have the Neighborhood, by MCI, with free local and long distance for around 40 a month, not including taxes. Seems pretty good to me

I have had AT&T for so long with no problems, they need to give me a rebate. I could be their poster woman.

3.9 cents a minute.
Only catch is they bill & invoice online with your credit card.
I use Discover, so I even get a discount/cash back on that.
I get my statement each month in e-mail.
Cheapest anywhere that I know of.
on edit-no monthly fee. Just the normal taxes you have to pay on any phone bill. Flat-ass 3.9 cents a minute.
Don't think you can beat it.

7. I Have Qwest
for 5 cents a minute, no minimum, no monthly fee. Billed on credit card. Very easy. Qwest is associated with US West (the former Bell system for much of the West), and is not a no-name company.

If you have a lot of long-distance (over $20), you might want to check out the unlimited packages from your local carrier.

10. I discontinued
my long distance service and started buying AT&T calling cards. A flat 3 cents a minute (no connection fees). It costs me about $19.50 for 650 minutes. Cards usually last me 4-5 months.

21. But ALL THOSE NUMBERS You Have To Dial
1-800-XXX-XXXX to reach their servers
then some code number
then the number you want to reach.

UGH! For the extra 2 cents per minute, I'd rather just dial right through.

But then again... it IS FUN to save!

28. wait, no, it's no bother
New fangled technology is part of calling cards. They give you the option to store the numbers you call a lot under something like *1 and *2 and that way you save a bunch of keystrokes. So they've got your personal stuff in their database, so what, they'll end up with it anyway.
jen - cheaper 'n you. heh heh :)

11. I don't have one.
I have a re-chargeable long-distance calling card. I dial an 800 number, punch in some codes and phone whomever I like. When the amount of minutes left on the card runs low, I phone the same 800 number and add minutes.

If I make no calls, I don't lose minutes. If I make calls, I pay only for the amount of time I'm on the phone with no line access fees, etc...

And the part I like best? The fees for calls are actually quite, quite low.

15. I use the progressive one.
Name escapes me at the moment, but they use the money I round up to progressive issues.

Oh, now I remember. It's called Working Assets. Worth it even if my dad bitches that they're slightly expensive in terms of coinage, but fortunately we don't make very many long distance calls.

17. Switch to Working Assets
They might cost you a bit more due to your USAA discount, but part of that money goes to progressive causes. I'm not sure who Sprint gives their money to, but I'm guessing it is not a progressive cause. Help make the world a little better with every phone call.

Here is their website:

Ps. You get a coupon for a free pint of Ben & Jerry's every month for a year with working assets.

Never use anything but the 10-10 numbers. Good one is 10-10-811. Just got a thing in the mail for one that only charges 3 cents a minute. Can't remember what the number is at the moment as I'm at work.

Not the cheapest, but I just feel better. No one has called or sent mailers to us in ages, trying to get us to switch to ATT, Sprint eetc.
Guess they gave up.

Whenever a rival company calls to ask me to switch I ask them if they'll print my bill on recycled paper, with soy based inks, and donate a portion of their profits to progressive groups.

None have met the challenge. They can't argue with it. They go away, and they don't come back for months.
