"Take Back the Night"
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 06:06 PM by Padraig18
Tonight at 7:00 p.m. marks the start of "Take Back The Night" activities. This event's purpose is to heighten awareness of sexual assault and violence against women. If you don't plan to join a walk or candlelight march, please turn on your outside light and leave it on all night to show your support.

Violence against women is a GROWING problem, and we need to raise our awareness of it!

"Take back the night!" :hi:

2. I don't expect any replies, but...
I just had to say my piece. I know several guys who think "take back the night" is the silliest thing they've ever heard.

Since (so they say) there is no such thing as rape or sexual assault, the entire movement is utterly stupid. Their contempt for the activity is nightmarish.

You cannot imagine my horror. One of these guys was a close friend of mine for many years. Even though I am his elder by several decades, I always thought he had a level head on his shoulders.

Until he came out and displayed his true colors. :(

But I support the movement 100% and will turn our lights on even though we cannot get out into the world to do our part.

3. Thank you!

I have never understood how some men--- men who profess to LOVE their wives, mothers, children, daughters, etc.--- could NOT be concerned about sexual- and domestic-violence against women!!! It absolutely boggles my mind... :wtf:

On edit: My grandfather, a poor Irish farmer with grammar-school education, once remarked to me that "Any civilised society worthy of the name must make the protection of women, children and innocents the basis of its most fundamental laws." :)

4. Let those men experience forced sex....
and see if perhaps their feelings changed. I've never been raped but I've known rape victims-it's one of the most hideous violations imagineable.

6. It is indeed. In fact...
Richard Crenna starred in a movie some time ago about a cop who *used* to think rape was a big joke. Until he was raped. Then, naturally, his story changed a great deal. The absurd thought that "rape is just sex" fled his mind rather rapidly.

It was a move that really made you think. Can't recall the name of it though...it's rather old.

7. I have DEEP empathy for assault victims!
I was the victim of an attempted sexaul assault, and it's hard to describe what it does to you inside! NO HUMAN BEING HAS A 'RIGHT' TO DO THAT TO ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING--- PERIOD, END OF DISCUSION! :grr:

5. I fought this type of mindset
for years. In most cases, these "men" come up with the most idiotic excuses known to humankind. They talk about "biological imperatives", about "men's rights to reproduce", etc, etc. None of which has any bearing on a civilized, rational society.

I've met a lot of good minded, decent men who have fought this type of thinking as well. But I've met quite a few who cling to the idea they have some right to "possess" any female they can get their hands on.

When the "Take Back The Night" movement began it's first steps, I saw a lot of men join in, hand-in-hand, with their friends. It wasn't until recently (a few years) I found out that many of the just paid lip service to it. In reality--they were on the hunt.

What a world. :(

This is just the sort of thread I love seeing at DU. I will have the outside light on at my house tonight.

(BTW, this is a great FYI for the Activism/Events forum, too!)
