Ho-hum to the Chief: Students tune out

If the second inauguration of President George W. Bush was one for the history books, then a big sampling of Caesar Rodney High School students seemed perfectly willing Thursday to wait for the delivery of the new volumes.

A lunchtime audience paid scant notice to six 27-inch television sets carrying the broadcast of inaugural activities in Washington.

Several students suggested a change of channel. When Fitzgerald gave a thumbs-up to an associate to turn up the volume, several students around the room replied with thumbs down.

One student, eating a tuna sub, wanted to know why the televisions were on at all.

"The focus of their attention is food first, then their friends, and, third, maybe the TVs," Fitzgerald said.
