Damn weatherman....now were getting blizzard warning.....

It 4 below and after spoon feeding us expect snowfall amounts they issued blizzard warning to expect between 18-24 inches of snow and winds gusting to 45 mph. Wow that should make for some extreme white conditions.

It sure going to put a damper on my social hour activities this weekend....my first one off in 3 months. :shrug:

6. Have you ever seen the grocey stores when they issue warnings....

I don't have a problem with it but they should have done it yesterday. People get that crazed look and buy enough stuff for a month. Sometimes these last minute warnings make things more of a problem then they should be.

I picked up what I needed to cook on the way home at 530 this morning.

and a special few begin to panic when they have to stand in line? Yes. I've learned to stay stocked up on most everything. Now that I'm retired, I enjoy shopping in the busy hours even less than before. I go either very early or very late. My wife and daughters want to go shopping now. I'll man the computer while they are gone.

Yesterday, the Hollywood Video parking lot was packed at about 3PM!

Driving gets treacherous here before a storm. People are so focused on getting to the store and not on the road.

5. Red sky in the morning

When I brought my dog out this morning, I could feel the change coming. I'm isolated in rural, upstate NY to begin with. My driveway is part of an old, Revolutionary War era turnpike; my house is the first stage coach station west of the Ft. Stanwix Treaty line. So it's always quiet here. But it was silent outside. I'll have the boys carry in more firewood, and get all three fireplaces going. Big storms can be fun, as long as you are warm and indoors!

times. I was there for the Washington B-day celebration some years back 37 below zero and a couple feet of snow. Burrrrrr now that was cold.

8. I'm south of the Fort .....

as you probably know, the line went down the Unadilla River to its intersection with the Susquehanna River, then south (and slightly westerly) along what is now the western boarder of Delaware County, to Deposit, at the boarder of PA.

I'm a couple miles north of the Unadilla-Susquehanna intersection. I did live in Herkimer, NY, not far from the Fort in my first years of college. I think it was even colder there than here!

My niece from the warmth and comfort of southern CA is spending her first winter in Syracuse! She thought it was cold here in September. Today will be an eye-opening experience for her.

I like "Historic New York" .... What part of the state are you in? I am something of a history buff myself.

the old O&W Railway? (Used to be the Midland Railroad.) Went out of business in 1957. I published a book on the Irish immigrants that worked on the O&W, and their contributions to local culture, last year.

13. I'm in Mass and they are talking at least 30 inches of snow where I am

It was panic in the house this morning! Checked the oil tanks and they were down to 1/8 and I just spent $300 on oil two weeks ago and another $200 two weeks before that! Had to call around to get an oil delivery today at an even higher per gallon price because it's not my usual guy -- who can't get here until Monday!

Called to have a cord of wood delivered (thank goodness the guy lives in town!) that will cost another $175.

Thank goodness I did the grocery shopping yesterday.

They are expecting the wind to make it feel like it is -60 here later in the night and early tomorrow morning.

I moved here a month after the blizzard of '78. I have seen snow and I have seen cold, but this is the worst storm I can remember ever being anticipated in this area.

And I thought hurricanes were bad! sheesh!

16. A full cord?

Even that is very steep! Around here a face cord is $35 delivered. Until I was in the car accident, my sons and I used my grandfather's two-man saw .... they don't miss it.

17. Yeah, a full cord

It was at $125 the last time I thought about buying a cord a few years ago. But it's split and seasoned and ready to burn so the cost around here is about normal. I haven't BOUGHT wood in years. but it's mighty cold already and if we lose power that's the only way to keep the kids from freezing.

A friends parents are also on the "go rescue them if the power goes out" list, so I have to make sure that I can keep them warm too. The father has a heart condition and the mother is pretty healthy, but they are no spring chickens anymore.

Thank goodness I have a fireplace to burn it in. Otherwise I would be a demcicle for sure!

18. I know that

people who sell it around these parts had far more orders than usual this year. A friend ended up running short, and the fellow who re-supplied him brought green wood. My friend continued to burn it -- bad call -- and had a chimney fire.

I have a central chimney, which has three fireplaces on the ground floor. It's an "open" downstairs from the days of being a stage coach station; there was an early post office and doctor's office here, too. At times like these, when the storms hit, we get a pretty clear idea how isolated this place must have seemed 200 years ago.

The advantage of the style of central chimney I have is that they stay clean. I used to clean it, and my boys do now, because every summer a number of birds nest inside. But it has a "box chamber" just above the fireplaces that builds up the heat, forcing the smoke out fast and clean. The technology is amazing, far better than what is generally found these days.

21. I have a 210 year old farm house

with fireplaces in every room but we only use one of the fireplaces. It has one central chimney with 7 flews (did I spell that right?) off that one chimney. I haven't had the others inspected in years so I wouldn't want to burn anything in them for sure.

I have another fireplace in the other end of the house that is all it's own system, but I know that one needs to be pointed and it leaks smoke in the attic that it passes through, so I will only use that one if I absolutely have to keep my pipes from freezing in that end of the house. I already have a space heater under my sink in that room that is not operating at all and I fear my pipes will be goners!

I feel like I am trapped in that old Elton John song -- Do I burn down the mission just to stay alive? Egads!

I told a friend today that if I could pick one day not to have to be the adult in the house, today would be it!

23. One of my sore spots in my home is my fireplace. It is one of those

inserts. I live in a townhouse condo and before it was built was never told that they had optional fans to throw out the heat. So mine is almost only good for decorative purposes.

BTW..your home sounds incredible!

24. Yep! For the first few years they're pretty useless, and then,

magically, a transformation takes place! When you do, remember that,so patience is necessary. Then, when they are old enough to do age appropriate chores, remember the carrot and horse method. It is awesome how well it works! ;)
