Gotta love this guy. When George Gershwin wrote him asking how much he'd charge for lessons, Ravel wrote back, asking how much Gershwin made. Gershwin--and mind you, this was in the early 1930s--estimated his take at $2,500.00 a week. Ravel replied by asking HIM for lessons.

8. a little off topic, but my friend and I play a two-piano version of Bolero

that kicks ass. Also, I perform the Left-hand piano concerto sometimes.


Ravel is one of the best composers to have ever lived.

15. A 12 inch 78 RPM version of the four hand Bolero

was one of my first "toys." My parents would show off that I could pick out and play their requests. Funny I didn't become a DJ, though I did a jazz radio show in college. Anyway, Bolero was my first favorite childhood music.

As a middle school math teacher, sometime during the year, I would play the Berlin Philharmonic version of Bolero for my students. Typically, they were astounded. How does that relate to math? Usually it was part of a unit on patterns.

10. I remember and I did think it was funny

then. My memories of that piece are different now, it was one of my embarrassing moments as a musician so I prefer not to think on it too much.

11. I played trombone in a symphony orchestra. The high d flat

for the trombone is the highest note for trombone of any orchestral work. Always scarred the hell out of me when we played it.

than the D flat I mentioned in the Bolero.
