"... I am, at this moment, stuck in DC, which I shall hereinafter refer to only as wimp central. This town got three - count 'em, three - inches of snow, and everything went to hell. They declared a snow emergency here at 8am, before a single flake hit the ground, thus allowing the cabbies to drop into hyper-gouge mode. They started charging double fares because of the snow 'emergency,' and that cost money. The horrific site of three inches of snow caused the wimps at National airport to cancel any flight going anywhere, thus marooning me and requiring me to get a hotel room, thus costing money. Because I missed my flight window back to Boston, where they are now getting two feet (TWO FEET) of snow, no flights will get there tomorrow, and so I had to get a train ticket to Boston, thus costing money.

The capitol city of the most powerful nation in the history of the planet was paralyzed today by three inches of fluffy snow. In order to get this kind of reaction in Boston, there would have to be live jaguars falling from the sky and devouring the citizenry from Back Bay to Quincy."

3. Our significant snow fall is almost ALWAYS preceeded by hours of

freezing rain. In fact, you need the snow for traction because of the damn ice slick.

I have been praying for snow since the 2nd of January to cover up all the darned ice. We had a week of above freezing temps and I still have a glacier in front of the barn. Tomorrow will be in the 50's, maybe that will finish it off. Makes you wonder when 3 inches shuts down everything.

Although I was a little dissappointed at the reaction to this last little snow storm here. Give me a break, people!

10. We barely even NOTICE three inches in Minnesota.

We got way more than that on Friday evening, and even my alley was plowed by the next morning. But I guess if you don't have any snow plows, it makes things a bit tougher. I went to Dallas a couple of years ago, and just after they'd had a rare snowfall. It was maybe 2 inches, and the whole place was paralyzed. And, of course, nobody knows how to drive on slippery roads if it hardly ever happens.

6. washington, from what I recall, is essentially a southern city.

(I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong) -- thus they probably don't HAVE a snowplowing budget. ever.

we freak out if we get an inch, but we get an inch every two or three YEARS, so why buy plows? we just stay home, it's easier. :D

7. In the NE, no one deals with snow like NY

they have the snow plows and salters out *before* it even starts snowing. Fairway was packed last night during the snow just as usual. No one even looked twice.

Boston does ok, too, but they don't have the budget of NY, and consequently, having lived a lot in both places, I don't believe they do as good a job, though the citizenry is hardly phased by it.

I worked in DC for a few years. I was a consultant where you were expected to work endless hours. One day, I heard a buzz that it was snowing. I went and looked. Yep, it was snowing. I went back to my cubicle and started writing. I walked out a few hours later and noticed most folks were gone. There wasn't anyone around to ask what happened. At five or six I left to get a bus. I had just sprained my ankle and I was on crutches. There was almost noone around. Very few cars, no taxis, and most businesses were closed. I was shocked and finally started worrying how I would get home. I lived about 5 miles from downtown. Normally, I could walk that but I was on crutches. It had snowed an inch or two. I looked for a taxi but there were none. I saw a bus and took it. There were only 5 to 6 folks on the bus--at rush hour! As soon as I got on the bus I started worrying about the walk home from the busstop. Normally, I would have many neighbors on the bus but not this time. So I get off the bus with noone else. I looked down the street..noone. I started downhill on my crutches on the icy street with my crutches and quickly fell. Tried again and fell. I ended up sliding down two blocks on my butt in my business suit. The next time it snowed in DC, I left early.

12. Southern attitudes, northern snow

DC has the southern approach to snow (close everything, stay home, and wait until it melts). Unfortunately, it does not have a southern climate.
