considering carson hated leno from what i've read and jay's manager more or less got NBC to force him into retirement, i can't help but wonder how insincere the whole thing was.

6. Letterman's Tribute, when it happens... |
|
will have to be entirely personal. No clips. I'm sure that the pricks at NBC won't let him have the rights to any.

7. Yeah I believe Dave referred to Johnny as "Dad" |
|
Letterman lost his father at a very young age (10?) so Carson pretty much filled the role or at least I have read that.
The last two days on The Today Show I think I have heard Dave's name once.......they are acting like he never worked for NBC and wasn't the one Carson wanted to take over the Tonight Show.

8. Carson writing jokes for Letterman |
|
I hadn't heard about this before I heard the news of Johnny's death, but he was apparently sending material to Dave that would occasionally end up in the monologue.
Can't same the same for Leno.

9. Yeah my wife told me that at about 1:30 Sunday afternoon |
|
We hadn't heard that Carson had passed until my Mom told me on the phone maybe two hours later.
That is what my wife said but she said that she had heard that they were ending up "on late night shows" which implies Leno too. Apparently Dave told a joke in his monologue and then said "And that one was NOT from Johnny".

2. Leno's was pretty good, but not so much for Jay |
|
but for the clips and appearances by Ed McMahon and especially Don Rickles and Bob Newhart--who were hilarious.

I'm a Letterman fan, but since he was in reruns I did watch Jay last night. I thought he did fine. He was more than respectful to Johnny. I did turn the show off when Drew Carey was due. I'm not sure why he was on the show, but perhaps just a prebooking.

5. Carey had one of the more memorable "call over"s |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 11:09 AM by underpants
I have seen it several times. Carey got finished and Johnny waved him over to the couch (instant stardom) Carey points to himself and said "Me?" he then ran over and plopped down in the chair and Johnny said "You are funny as hell" Carey paused (visibly nervous) and said "Thanks....so are you".
I don't like Carey's politics and his show was eh okay but he was a really good stand up. Oh and he took a stripper to the White House when he was invited by W-gotta love that.
