RALEIGH, N.C. -- A medical examiner studying a body in a morgue was shocked when he saw the man take a shallow breath.
Larry Green was removed from the morgue at the Franklin County Sheriff's Department and taken to Duke University Medical Center in Durham. He was in critical condition Monday night.
Medical examiner J.B. Perdue was documenting Green's injuries to certify a cause of death when he noticed Green breathing. Green had been declared dead at the accident scene after being hit by a car almost two hours earlier.
Emergency medical technicians declared the 29-year-old Louisburg man dead Monday night and put him in a body bag for transport to the morgue.
At the morgue, Perdue detected an irregular breath and called emergency medical services to take Green to the hospital. Franklin County attorney Darnell Batton said several members of the Franklin EMS have been suspended pending an investigation.
