CT DUers - why does our snow removal suck compared to Mass?

My wife works up in Mass and always comments on how as soon as she crosses the border going up 91 in Enfield to Springfield or going up Route 83 or Rouet 32, the roads magically become better when entering Massachusetts. Having worked 2 years in Springfield before that, I can confirm that this is true.

Is there a reason for this? The only thing I can think of is that Rowland axed so many DOT employees that the job just does not get done as well as it should, as we often have to rely on private contractors to supplement our snow removal... of course, I could be all wet on this.

Does Mass make extensive use of private contractors for snow removal?

Up here in W. MA, my friends from VT always tell me the roads are great there, right up to the MA border, where it turns to shit...Go figure!

the local roads here are a mess, but the highways are OK it seems. i was out yesterday, and some of the side streets are impassable or littered with cars that are stuck. It took me 45 minutes to go 3 miles yesterday.

The Pike ain't too bad, but nothing to write home about. But the Governor wants to fix that so it sucks as much as the rest.
