Can someone tell how to find out how much of a memory upgrade I can do ...

on my toshiba laptop? It came with 512 MB and 60 GB. I know space is limited on a laptop, but I was wondering how I can find out what I can add to the computer.

1. It depends on the memory modules it uses

My Sony came with 512 MB on two modules, I can go up to 1 gig if I get the 512 MB modules versus the 256 MB modules.

2. Go to toshiba's site and lookup your model.

It's possible that your memory slots are filled, so to upgrade, you would have to buy two 512MB chips to upgrade to 1024 (meaning you have two 256 chips filling the slots (or if you have more slots, some combination that fills the slots). However, it's also possible that you have one 512 chip and an empty slot where you can put another to upgrade to 1024.

If you bought the computer without customizing it, the toshiba site should have the exact specifications for what it came with and how to upgrade.

has a handy little memory adviser application. Go to http://www.crucial.com and you can lookup exactly what you can put in your computer.

4. Go to their website. These things are very particular.

Take down the PC full model# and serial number before you do.

You need to find out:

1. How many slots it has total?
   
2. How many slots are free (do not currently have memory installed in them)?
   
3. Do the chips need to be installed in matched pairs? (i.e.: is your 512MB made up of 2 @ 256MB)
   
4. What is the maximum supported RAM
   

You can find out a lot from the memory manufacturers. They have search tools to help you.

5. Just Curious. Why do you need to increase the size that much?

I would think that 512 would be plenty for a laptop.

It is a good idea to upgrade memory when using any of Adobe's applications!
