Houston art & civil rights patrons (the late) John & Dominique De Menil hired him to build their house. Their influence led to many other projects in Houston--buildings that have meant a lot here.

4. Tremendously influential architect. Some less than admirable stuff...

in his early personal life...expressing a public admiration of Hitler and Nazism in his youth, as well as being anti-semitic. But he later attempted to atone for those.

5. He & Senator Byrd both had bad patches in their youth.

But they both lived long enough & did enough good work to make up for it.

Apparently, someone once asked Mr Johnson why he'd become so famous, when other fine architects remained unknown to the general public. He answered "It helps to be a gay Nazi."
