Is it difficult to learn to play the piano?

I would like to learn, but don't know if I am that suave. I am a drummer by trade and musically inclined, however, the piano seems difficult. Any tips? Should I pay for lessons, self teach or what?

2. Get lessons

Becoming proficient isn't that hard. Becoming excellent is. I'd strongly recommend lessons since self taught players can easily develop bad habits and can't move beyond basic proficiency. If you already read music, you'll move quickly through beginning lessons.

One could take a year or two, the other could take a lifetime.

And you're already musically inclined. You sure do have rhythm if you play drums ... so go for it but take some lessons. And don't forget to have fun with it.

9. I became a drummer because I couldn't sight-read for shit

Took piano lessons, tried the sax - same problem. Switched to drums and it came naturally. I was damn good and playing in rhythm sections really influenced my tastes in music, too (see awesome band below).

...or learning to read music either...I can peck out tunes on the piano by ear....but never did apply myself to further any of it. x(
