PORTAGE - A 15-year-old Poynette boy is being held in Columbia County Jail for attempted murder after he allegedly tried to poison his family over a five-week period.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Department arrested Jamie L. Auck Tuesday afternoon at Poynette High School after beginning the investigation into the alleged poisoning that morning. Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Roger Brandner initially responded to a call around 9 a.m. Tuesday when Auck's stepfather, Charles Lester, found "bluish-green pebbles" in used coffee grounds and in an open can of ground coffee, according to the case's criminal complaint.
Lester said he recognized the pebbles as d-Con, a rodent poison which he kept under the kitchen sink.
Lester said he felt sick for the last four to six weeks with symptoms of stomach pains, heartburn and vomiting. A doctor wasn't able to diagnose his illness, Lester reported, and said he was also becoming suspicious because his wife, Patricia, his 3-year-old daughter and his dog were frequently sick.
The Lesters told detectives Auck was the only person not getting sick. Charles Lester also said Auck threatens his mother "on almost a daily basis," and that Auck had previously threatened Lester's life.
Because of those threats, Lester said the couple makes Auck sleep in a walk-in closet near their bedroom "so they can watch him,'" according to Brandner's report.
Detective Sgt. Linda Shawback later found the same pebbles in some barbecued meat.
The Lester family was treated and later released Tuesday from Divine Savior Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Tracy Earll. The Sheriff's Department also said the family underwent tests, but no results were available as of Wednesday afternoon.
When Shawback and detective Sgt. Jay Yerges confronted Auck Tuesday afternoon, he admitted putting the poison in some juice about five weeks ago, they said. "Auck stated he knew that everyone in the residence drinks the juice," the detectives reported.
