Today, after 5 years and £5000+, I paid off my student loan. Hooray!

Today, after 5 years and £5000+, I paid off my student loan. Hooray!
Today's exchange rates, the original balance of my loan(s) amounts to about $10,000 American. I graduated before the Millennium, and have been paying it back at about $170 a month ever since (minus a short bout of unemployment post-graduation). I'm free, free!!!!!!

3. I haven't touched mine.
I owe about 6000 quid from 1994-8. I've never earned enough to qualify for repayments.

5. Ha! That didn't stop them charging me!
"You don't earn enough" my friends said, "Get a deferment". But the SLC was adamant: I would pay. I started paying when I earned £19,000.

6. Ah. I don't think I've ever earned more than $30,000 Cdn a year.
It would have to be about $45,000 before I'd have to make repayments.
I doubt I'll ever earn that, really.

I remember when I paid mine off, it was a great feeling! One great advantage too is that your credit history will benefit forever for this.

13. My education was free. And my accommodation was subsidised.
But my living expenses, I had to pay myself.

I was the penultimate year of free college education; I graduated in 1999, and those who graduated in 2001 paid for it.

What they're talking about now is top-up fees, which are a different matter and I shouldn't get started on.
