the only night I could stay up until 9:00. Always sat up with my
dad and watched "Red Skeleton"----what wonderful memories.

Route 66 and The Jackie Gleason Show, were favorites in my house.

East Side/West Side--drama about social workers starring George C. Scott and Diana Sands (controversial for casting a black woman who wore an Afro!)

Outer Limits

Intelligent variety shows: Garry Moore, The Bell Telephone Hour, Judy Garland

The Eleventh Hour--drama about psychiatrists

Ben Casey, The Nurses, Dr. Kildare--medical dramas with more emphasis on human relationships than on saying "Adrenaline, STAT!"

Friday night--Route 66, followed by the Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock

Jack Paar--talk show that wasn't afraid to feature highbrow guests

The Defenders--father and son lawyers who tackled contemporary issues

Maybe I'm just looking at this schedule through rose-colored glasses and the perceptions of a 14-year-old, but TV was smarter in those days, and Newton Minow, chairman of the FCC, still referred to it as "a vast wasteland." I wonder what he'd say in this era of "200 channels and nothing worth watching."
