I got the feeling that he was a competent drummer who had learned one drum pattern and learned it well.

In other words, he'd fit in perfectly in most current pop-rock bands.

Pete is on some of the Anthology One cuts and it's amazing he lasted 2 years with them. Listen to Love Me Do, he just butchers it...if you listen to Ringo doing it on the Live at the BBC anthology, he plays it perfectly...

18. Well, as I said before, I think he only knew one pattern well.

Basically a snare beat on the 2 and 4, with an extra accent on the and of 2. I'd try to illustrate, but if you've heard Anthology, you know what I mean.

In the "Someone to love, somebody new" section, he switches from the shuffle pattern present in the rest of the song to the pattern he seems to play on every other Anthology track.

Demos and alternate takes are usually very interesting to me... it's cool to get an insight into the whole creative process.

23. Yes! Ringo is my favorite! "P.S I Love You" included Ringo on ...

maracas, and Andy White, a "session" drummer performing the drum track on "P.S I Love You" which was finalized after then 10th take. at that time "out-takes" were not backed up. The White performance is the one which was released. There were questions regarding the "Love Me Do" performing drummer, but, it has been accepted that the performance of White was not significantly superior to that of Ringo's; hence that is the one which was released.

NOW! Which is the "best" Beatles drum track...hmmm?

I would not say that the track which McCartney did on "Blackbird" would cut the mustard with only the metronome ticking in back.

I have seen a "Strawberry Fields Forever" being cited. Ringo played on the two tracks which were "melded" together. What happened was this: There several takes of this song. Lennon went to George Martin and said that he liked the first part of one track, but, liked the last part of another track. This was inadvertently resolved by circumstance. In "analog" recording, if the speed of the track is "speeded" up, the consequence is a change in "pitch". The two parts, of the two separately recorded tracks of "Strawberry Fields Forever", just happened to match with the originally recorded KEY signature, and the difference of speeding up the track which would fit the KEY signature of the other....quite accidentally derived upon. As a consequence, the two tracks were spliced together with Ringo on both.....resulting in the final product. A recording feat by Geoff Emerick and George Martin.

As John Lennon has been quoted regarding the performance of Ringo..."He did the job"....and that is good enough for me!
