What was the FIRST major historic event that you remember where you were?

For me, it was when Reagan was shot - I came home from elementary school to see it on the news...

1. I *sorta* remember Watergate

It was all over the news every night...I kept waiting for them to show a picture of this "water" gate cos I thought that sounded like it'd look cool. :D

2. Sputnik

At the family dinner table as a young boy.

3. maybe not major, but the very first news story I remember is the death

of Harry Truman. I was in the bedroom my sisters and I shared at our grandmother's house on Daisy in Long Beach, CA, looking at the story on a little B&W television. Somehow that event is associated in my memory with the dime, and for a very long time I thought it was Truman whose profile is on the ten cent piece.

4. I was alive for Sputnik, but it happened when I was 11 months old...

So for actual memory it would have to be JFK's assassination for me (my 7th birthday :().

We went over to our neighbours to watch it - didn't have a TV until several years later.

I remember it vividly. I vaguely remember "The Day the Music Died" in 1959 - I was in Kindergarten at the time.

It was for me - and I might have been in it then - I just don't remember and I didn't feel like trying to figure it out.

Girls locker room, 7th grade, after phys ed class. People mostly either stunned or weeping.

This kid that was a well-known liar, and he told us two impossible things: that the President had been shot, and that our supermacho gym teacher was crying. Both were true.

6th grade.

Then the whole country shut down for days, right through the funeral.

I saw Lee Harvey Oswald get shot by Jack Ruby on live television, a couple of days later.

I was eating lunch at school when the principal came in and told everyone.

Then I remember hearing about Bobby dying on the radio as my mom drove us to a public swimming pool...that would have been June 6, 1968.

23. The first Gulf War is the first major event I honestly remember

I was in the first grade, and I kept wondering if "they" were going to kill President Bush.

I really envy those of you who have experienced so much more of American history, especially those of my parents' and grandparents' generations.
