The way I talk is about the same as the way people on TV or movies talk. I'm not sure what accent that is. I'm from Maine. No Down East accent here. The only people that have that accent anymore are the old folks. I haven't met any young people that talk like that.

32. What's a Minnesota accent?

My mom and her family are from Minnesota. I haven't noticed that many differences in the way they talk in comparison to most people I've met in Maine. They do say some different words like "pop" instead of "soda". Also, they pronounce the word roof as "ruff". Those were the only differences I've ever noticed.

My husband's family is from Michigan too. I never noticed an accent from them either. If there is a Midwestern accent, it must be not be all that common anymore. I guess it's kind of like how the Down East accent isn't all that prevalent in Maine any more.

36. Oh, my. Minnesotans have a very distinct accent.

Hard to describe but I can point to the hard "O" that sometimes sounds like it's preceded by a soft "U," as in "put." There's also a cadence to their speech that's very distinct.

Wisconsinites have a similar accent but I think it's more pronounced in Minnesotans.

They had a "coach" help the actors with the accent--in fact he is a sometimes guest/contributor to A Prairie Home Companion, and has a book titled "How to Talk Minnesotan."

A lot of people from around here HATED that movie, curiously the people who are most adamant in their criticism are closest to it in their speech! I loved the movie, if nothing else wherever I've traveled in this world everybody has seen Fargo so I can explain to them where in the US I am from.

And I'm not denying I have an accent, but I have to work a little bit to really crank it up. Unless I'm drunk and around my outstate relatives ;)

For other accents though--the truly indecipherable Scots is awesome!

My favorite thing about "Fargo" was the way Frances McDormand talked. I couldn't get enough of it. Tell your local "Fargo"-detractors that the movie doesn't mock their speech but rather celebrates it and that's a good thing and, jeez, they gotta calm down about it. :-)

My Irish accent is actually just my impersonation of the pastor at my old church, and my Scottish accent is basically my impersonation of Mike Myers' Stuart Rankin (if it isn't Scottish it's CRAP!) on Saturday Night Live. Occasionally a touch of the Anglo-Scottish Edinburgh accent, most people would assume that it's an English accent, but little tiny bits at the edges give away a dash of Scots.
