How much is a gallon of milk where you live?

I'm shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you - to find out that a gallon of milk here (five miles from FRIGGIN' DAIRYLAND ROAD in COW COUNTRY, NC) costs $3.30. Since when is milk more expensive than gas? Shit on a stick - we gotta get the kids weaned onto Dom Perginon or something cheap like that.

Every week I buy a 2 pound brick of medium cheddar. Sometimes $2.99. Never more than $4.99.

When I was in New England I noticed their cheese prices are OUT OF SIGHT. Horrible.

But I buy Oakhurst because they don't use artificial growth hormones. And it was purchased in a convenience store. Oakhurst is battling a huge suit with Monsanto for putting that claim on their milk label. They are a little milk producer in Maine taking on a huge chemical giant. Interestingly enough, their milk is the most popular brand in this Republican town. Is it because the women buying it for their Republican families are really Dems? Is it because it is a little producer thumbing their nose at a big chemical company? Is it because the milk just plain tastes better? Don't know :)

We've got a milk board or some such that keeps the prices up above what they are in most places. Stores can charge more than the set amount, but they can't charge less.

Milk price controls are kind of a racket. I'm a little vague on the details, but I think they were enacted during the Depression to help keep dairy farmers from going broke and have never been reconsidered. If any one of you is looking for a research project, you might check into them.

Oh, you mean how much does it COST?! I see. I don't really know, because I buy organic milk buy the half gallon. Generally more expensive: $3.49

We just bought soy milk the other day... there is really very little difference in taste. My partner has cholesterol problem, so we have been searching for whatever we can to substitute within a zone of comfortablity. Looks like soy milk will land within that zone.
