My wife is leaving tonight.

She likes Mardi Gras parades and scrambling for all the cheap made-in-China beads and gew-gaws the float-riding krewes throw.

I just don't get it.
I finally went to my first Mardi Gras parade last year, so now I can say "been there, done that". <yawn>

I can see how little kids would like it, kinda like Halloween with free goodies and costumes and all. It's just not my idea of a fun thing to do.

Miz t. is going with some friends. These people (including Miz t.) are all in their 60s. The parade is about 30 miles away, it may be drizzling, and the temp will be in the 40s. I'd rather stay here where it's nice and warm and dry and listen to Prairie Home Companion while sucking up a few Scotches.

She says she understands, and it's OK.
They're eating out after the parade, so she's making me pimento cheese for supper, one of my favorites.

I don't think she's pissed, but I feel like a spoilsport.
Should I have sucked it up and gone with her?

If I said I was going to Mardi Gras with some friends, I think it would be MY husband who'd be pissed. He wouldn't stop me or anything, but he'd be a bit worried about me earning beads and such.

(I never got the appeal of Mardi Gras, either.)

28. Here's what happened last year:

We went.
With us was a couple who are our very best, closest friends.
We are like brothers and sisters.
When our kids were little, we named each other as guardians in case...well...whatever.
We are godparents to their kids and they are godparents to ours.

They are both physicians. Two of the most intelligent people I know.
Maybe THE most intelligent. I don't know enough about their personal finances to know if they're wealthy, or just "comfortable".
Since they're both doctors, you can draw your own conclusions.

My most vivid memory of the parade is Tish, out in the middle of the street, sometimes in danger of being run over by the next float, with her butt in the air, scrabbling for cheap trinkets. Her hand was stepped on by other revelers a few times. Not at all unusual.

I think it's a sickness.
