My dog just broke a window

She went flying at the window because of some imaginary threat from the outside and broke it. I put cardboard in for now.

Does anyone know how hard it is to put a new pane in a window?

Does anyone know how to stop a dog from doing this?

1. yeah, replace the glass with plexi glass and let he bash her nose

a couple of times, she'll stop it.

2. It depends on the type of window.

Old double hung wooden casement windows are pretty straightforward. Cutting the glass was the toughest part, but the home centers do that now.

I did a quick search and took a quick look at this site. It seems about right.

I don't remember the guidelines with glazing compound and temperature. If it is too cold to work it and let it set, that could be a problem.


If it is an insulated dual pane window, that is a different story altogether.

4. Is she okay?

My best friend's dog did something like that last year (he went from the outside in to get a burglar) and his leg was messed up bad enough to neeed surgery. He's okay now, but your post reminded me of that. Hope she's all right. :)

Does she normally bark at nothing or do stuff like this? Maybe there really was something out there? Aliens? Republicans? Girl Scouts waiting to inject liquified thin mints straight into your thighs? I don't know, but dogs have keen senses, so maybe she knew something was up. :shrug:

5. She's fine

except for the trauma of me yelling at her.

I think they (there is another dog who doesn't jump at the windows) hear something outside, someone walking with a dog. Maybe they are republican detectors.

Thanks for the reminder that the GS cookies will be coming soon, I feel better now. Also on the good news side, it's only about 20 outside and I do have storm windows. So if I get this fixed before it gets cold again, there won't be too much damage. And hey, I'll have learned how to replace a window pane.

7. Our dog did that once and is lucky he didn't kill himself...

We lived in a house built into a hill and all of the living space was on the second floor. We had this "Grid" of windows, and our dog used to be able to see out of one in the corner. For some reason, everytime a car started he went nuts and would jump against this window.

My wife and I are laying in bed one night and we hear this loud crash. My wife said, "It sounds like someone just broke a car windshield." I get up, go to the window "grid" and look out. I'm looking for awhile and then it registers -- there is no glass! Our dog slammed against it with his paws and knocked the window out. It fell from the second floor to the street and shattered. He's lucky he is a big dog or he probably would have gone with it!!

8. Wowser

That's one of those stories where so much could have gone wrong, the dog goes down with the window, the pedestrian that gets hit by the glass, the cut feet walking up to the grid. I guess what happened here could have been a whole lot worse.
