1. I'll tell ya, I had a couple of 'em.
No prob at all. Less painful than having fillings put in, really. They take longer, and they're tedious, but I was really surprised that there wasn't much to it. And they felt so much better after the root canals.

Best luck to you! I was nervous and anxious as hell for my first one. And when the doc was done, I said, "Done? That's it? Where's the 'searing pain' part I heard about?"

5. I agree less painful than filling, a lot less painful than the teeth
that needed work.

6. The searing pain comes if the tooth abcesses before they can
get to the root canal.

:)

9. I had one done back in the 70's when I was a kid...
It hurt like a motherf*cker!!

I am sure that they have made great improvements in the procedure since then. I hope that they have, as my dentist said I may need one soon.

2. Yikes - good luck
A friend of mine had one last week and said it was far less painful than she'd been led to believe. Good luck to you - let us know how you come through.

3. Actually, if I need a root canal, I do look forward to it.
Because getting the tooth fixed is better than the excruciating pain if I don't.

But of course, it's not fun to have done. Hope it goes smoothly for you!

4. What a coincidence! It's only fourteen hours until my...
...well, I don't know what you'd call it, but a tooth that already had a root canal has fallen apart, now. The crown came off, and there's not much left underneath. The strange thing is that it hurts. I thought root canaled teeth were dead.

Anyway, good luck, and remember that I'm feeling your pain, hon.

7. My dentist said he'll give me nitrous and I can watch a movie of my choice
I'm thinking Shrek. It's a happy movie. Gotta be something light and distracting.

Heck, as long as they deaden the tooth I'll be okay.

21. Animation on nitrous? That could be habit forming.....
My root canal was no big deal, but I have been told that I have a high tolerance for pain... or was it that I was an insensitive SOB??? I forget, but the root canal was nothing to get in a twist about.

10. Me too!
1000 hrs on the West Coast, I get a root canal and crown on a back molar. It's broken pretty badly, I'm surprised they can save it.

13. I'm afraid of vicodin!
I took it once after gum surgery.... I was drifting in and out on my sofa watching a Cubs game. I thought I was at Wrigley Field. I tried to call my mom and kept losing the game -- and I couldn't get a dial tone. Well, duh! The remote control is not a phone.

It scared the heck out of me. No more vicodin!

15. What scared you? The euphoria? The happiness?
The contentment? The warm, pleasant feeling? Just curious. :-)

22. Mine, too!
Damn. I thought the root canal was supposed to take the nerves out so the pain would go away. Fat chance of that. It hurts like hell! I took some Advil and it hasn't kicked in yet.

Sonovabitch this mofo hurts!

16. Good luck to all of the dental sufferers!
I've never had a root canal, but I've had three crowns, which wasn't my idea of a really good time.

19. Actually..
I do have a quick gag reflex, but the endodontist said if you can open wide enough it's a work around.

And vicodins good, but percocet is better...

..and make sure you get gas...have 'em turn it up real good. It's like pot but much smoother.

20. Do you have soft foods ready in the event of soreness?
Smoothie supplies, refried beans, mashed potatoes, applesauce, soup, whatever your likes are? Just in case.

Also you may like to have those ice packs that you can break that immediately get cold. In the event you have some swelling--those are helpful.

(sorry--my former dental assisting training kicks in when I see dental procedures discussed). :)

23. Ice? I was wondering whether ice or heat.
Makes since.... it's probably swollen and that will help the swelling.

24. Maybe I was young and dumb,
But when I was in my early twenties I told my dentist just to pull the damn thing instead of doing a root canal.

I now have a bridge there.
