Poll question: Is your name gender specific?
As John is for a boy... or Deborah for a girl. Can it be used for either.... such as Terry.

1. My name is unique, but people tend to think it is a man's name.
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 04:53 PM by RaleighNCDem
It's only a female name as far as I know though. In college, I always got the postcards from Playboy. I was the only one in the girl dorm to get them.

edit: spelling error

6. My name is Kim....
Most automatically think it is a girls name... but... there are a few of us male Kims out there. This summer I worked for our city recreation department and I told a young boy about ten years old that my name was Kim and he didn't believe me. I had to show him my drivers license.

I used to hate my name as a kid...but as I grew older I enjoy having an unusual name.

3. I was on a plane last week and a group of women were travelling
together. One of them kept saying, "Sam" and I kept turning my head. She was talking to one of the other ladies. So I guess my name is gender nonspecific. :-)

7. Not at all
I believe Leslie was a male name before it became popular as a female name. I go by "Les" for short, I think most male Leslies tend to do so.

13. I once ran into a guy named Fay....
I never ever thought that a guy would be named Fay... I guess the surprize that I had....was simular to those that aren't familar with Kim as a male name....

I have known a few Leslie boys...I also know a Les who is a friend of my Father in Law.... but I don't know if he is Leslie or Lester.

31. Yes, it was
In fact, two of the first three Leslies I knew (other than myself) were men -- the band director and PE teacher at my elementary school! We haven't preserved the male/female distinction in spelling in this country, which means that (a) I still get mail addressing me as "Mr." (I can always tell who's sold their mailing list!) including subscription offers from Playboy, and (b) when I spent a semester in London, most of the folks I met thought it amusing to inform me that I was spelling my name incorrectly -- apparently over there, females still spell it "Lesley."

And I hate hate hate it when people call me "Les," for the reason you mention -- it's a male nickname! But I like the fact that the name never became all that popular (not to the level of names like Jennifer), and it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, career-wise, that people can't tell for certain upon reading my name that I
m a woman.

36. Leslie was a male name
It seems to be the custom in modern times to adapt male names as female names, and Leslie is a example of that. Leslie Groves would be surprised that people thought he was female in my last history class...

most guys named Robin seem to be British though.

I remember being teased about Robin of "Batman&Robin" being a guy when I was a little girl. And of course about flying south and red breasts and all...

but my nickname can be used for either sex. I don't know how much you know about birth order research, but as a typical only or first born, I don't like to be called my nickname. I love my full name though.
