Listening to Metallica's "Ride the Lightning".
I am now on "Fade to Black". This and "The Call of Ktulu" are my favorite tracks from this album.

1. "Fade To Black" is the best on that album...
but "...And Justice For All" is their best, I think, after which they degenerated into crap. And the whole Napster thing put me off of Metallica for all time.

10. I totally agree on AJFA as their best.
although ride the lightning is a damn good second album for a band.

Fight Fire with Fire is my favorite off that album. I love that speed metal riff - fun to play!

I also really like "Trapped under Ice" as well.

2. Don't you realize that Master of Puppets is a far better album?!?!
Enjoy yourself, though!

5. Yes. Master is far superior.
But "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Fade to Black", and "The Call of Ktulu" make this worthwhile.

12. There is no better
when it's a matter of taste. Honestly I like Ride the Lightning more, just felt the songs had more character for some reason, if that makes any sense. I've listened to both of these CDs probably hundreds of times and I'm more sick of MOP then RTL.

3. I still like that one. Title track, too.
Though the sound is not the best. A colder mix than their later albums. Too much reverb, I guess. Not enough cowbell.

4. I like "Escape"
also "Call of Ktulu"

That may be their best album...that or Master of Puppets.

7. It annoys me to listen to it now considering how bad they've become.
How can you be so great and turn into total shit 5 years later? It's a disgrace the way they have wasted their talent. Cliff spins and spins.

8. More like 10 years considering RTL came out in 1984.

9. Black album was the sellout album.
I was just being general. It's actually 7 years.

11. I think they sold out when the video for
'One' came out. The thing I hate about Metallica is that they REALLY talked shit about commercialism and sell-outs at the very beginning of their career. They never missed their chance at taking jabs at hair bands and sell-outs in Hit Parader and Circus magazines in the early '80s.

I wish I had those old magazines to give you some juicy quotes. Here is one I remember, 'We will never make do the MTV thing, we will never write a love song unless its about beer, and we would rather have a few hardcore fans than to sell millions of albums.' Metallica circa '84.

I guess it really doesn't matter when they sold out or even that they sold out, its that they used anti-commercialism as a tool to become commercial. Reminds me of the era when the only bands who sold records, had to have indie cred. They got that trick from the masters, Metallica.

At least Madonna told us she wanted to take over the world. As much as I hate Metallica, I still listen to their music up til 'Justice.'

13. Well that was certainly the beginning.
But the music on Justice was still heavy and fast. They didn't go all out commercial until Black. Yeah all those comments about their alleged "integrity" are really what stings. They used us and then threw us away, I fucking despise them.

14. You are right Mr. Slayer
I just thought that the video for 'One' was the first step. They crossed the line completely with 'Black.'

The things that have come out of Ulrichs mouth the past 15 years are sickening. His hypocracy reminds me of a republican.

17. Yeah the troll fuck needs to be beaten down.
But he's always been an asshole, even when their music was good. I have a great interview with Tom Araya from 85 or so where he talks about wanting to kick his ass for being a mouthy little fuck. He had nothing but praise for Cliff, Kirk and James but clearly Lars was a douche even then.

16. At least Newstead was always the only honest one...
... he said "People say we sell out, I say we DO sell out... every seat in the house... every time we play... anywhere in the world.."

And I was actually like "right on, man" because if you lay it out there, I can respect that. I'd be in it to make some dough, too.

Musical integrity is nice and all, but it won't buy you 10 Lamborghinis.

:dunce:

18. I remember that quote.
Gee I wonder why he was being so defensive? Newstead wasn't there in the beginning talking shit about 'sell-outs' like Ulrich and Hetfield. So he did the dirty work for them.

Notice they dumped him when he became a business liability. They can make all the money they want to. But I can and will continue to hate them for being blatant hypocrites.

Like Mr. Slayer said, they used us then dumped us. Did the same thing to Newstead. F them and the lambo's they dissed hair bands for driving. The hair band have more integrity, you knew they were full of shit.

20. They did do "...And Justice For All" with Newsted.
Besides, Newsted was a fan before he was in the band. He was really upset when Cliff Burton died.

19. And then Newsted had the integrity to get out of there.
Because he wanted to be creative. He bashed Metallica for touring with Linkin Park, which I would agree with. Of course, he was always treated like an outsider by James and Lars.

21. If you search around on the net
there is a playboy interview with Metallica right before Jason split that actually told me quite a bit I'd never heard before about the split & some other not so pleasant details. Interesting stuff.
